Various branches of the GoldSrc and
Source engine by both Valve and third-party developers. A build of GoldSrc and Source is only considered a branch when it is incompatible with previous releases.
For example, Source 2013 (which includes Half-Life 2) does not have any new features that
CS:GO engine branch had, and maps (aswell as VTF 7.5 textures) made for Alien Swarm (up to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) will refuse to load in Half-Life 2, unless it is converted.
Additionally, there is also sub-branches. In Source 2009 and Source Multiplayer case, Source Multiplayer is primarily designed for multiplayer, and received more frequent updates. The same is also true for Source 2013 Singleplayer and Source 2013 Multiplayer, with the latter sub-branch first released in March 2013, before Source 2013 Singleplayer in May 2013. Source 2013 Multiplayer (and later it's successor, Team Fortress 2 branch) additionally have features exclusive to that branch, like static prop lightmaps, BSP compression, more ambient cubes per visleaf for example.
