Players can either go down into the sewers (which leads back to the top), or simply moving around the catwalk then proceed to the door.

Hazard Course is a chapter in Half-Life Half-Life, designed to teaching player how to play the game. This chapter was later expanded on the PlayStation 2 PlayStation 2 version, adding a cutscene in which a Black Mesa scientist explains the risks of potential injuries Gordon may receive during the training course, as well as introducing the additional room teaching the player to use the lock-on feature present in the console edition of the game.


Introduction and walkthrough

The player begins inside a elevator, walks out, and the Holographic Assistant introduces the Hazard Course:

"Hello and welcome to the Black Mesa Hazard Course, where you'll be trained in the use of a hazardous environment suit. I am your holographic assistant. Let's begin by stepping into your suit. You can see it suspended up ahead of you."

After the introduction, the player (Gordon Freeman) wears HEV suit, the next area teaches about moving around and how to interact with the environment. Players can either go down into the sewers (which leads back to the top), or simply moving around the catwalk then proceed to the door.

Next area teaches player how to jump, crouch, and crouch jumping. The player enters a pipe which leads to next map that teaches player how to use ladders, and jumping at longer distance. Later the player gets a Long Jump module, allowing players to jump at even longer distance. After this, the player get's into an elevator and jump down, hurting the player, then the Holographic Assistant teaches player how to use Health Charger to heal the player.

Next, the Holographic Assistant teaches how to interact with a valve to rotate a bridge, pushing crates and moving it. Then the player gets the Crowbar, breaking creates and the grate, crouch inside vents, and using flashlight, while collecting HEV Battery (spawn by world_items, which charge the HEV suit.

The player now enters Target Range Access, leading to next map which teaches player how to use weapons (weapon_9mmAR (MP5) and collecting ammo & MP5 grenades), and shoot a moving target. Next area teaches player how to swim, and using suit charger. Players then pass through hazardous area containing hot steam, exploding boxes, and area which are contaminated with radiation waste.

The player then enter the last area of Hazard Course through an elevator, leading security guard to open the door, then using the train to leave the area, completing Hazard Course.


NPCs

All of the Hazard Course features Holographic Assistant, which is a monster_generic NPC. Occasionally, scientists and security guards appears in some area of Hazard Course, and near the end of Hazard Course, where Hazard Course instructs the player to lead a security guard, on the ceiling there is two turret guns, which activates when the player kills a security guard.
