O Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools, também conhecido como SDK, é um conjunto de softwares que te permitem criar seus próprios leveis, campanhas, infectados comuns, e outros elementos de jogabilidade. Eles incluem versões das ferramentas source que foram atualizadas para trabalhar com a versão do 
Source para Left 4 Dead.

O Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools é disponível gratuitamente no Steam para todos os donos de Left 4 Dead para PC.
Baixando e instalando
Instalando o Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools
Para instalar o Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools, clique aqui ou:
- Reinicie o Steam se estiver aberto.
- Abra a janela Steam .
- Clique na aba Ferramentas (Tools caso seu Steam esteja em inglês) .
- Duplo-clique no Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools para abri-lo.
- O Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools será baixado no seu computador através do Steam.
- Ao ser totalmente instalado, você será capaz de rodá-lo do mesmo modo que o instalou (Na aba Ferramentas).
Você pode também criar um atalho no desktop clicando com o botão direito do mouse no Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools e clicando em Criar atalho na área de trabalho (ou Create desktop shortcut se seu Steam estiver em inglês).

- Hammer atualizado, o editor Source para mapas
- Utilitários de linha de comando para compilação, como
studiomdle compilador de mapas - Particle editor atualizado
- Faceposer atualizado
- Mapas de exemplo
- Exemplo de modelos: infectados comuns, objetos quebráveis, e explosivos
- Exemplo de particle systems (particles/particle_sample.pcf)

- O Tutorial básico para design de level do L4D é um tutorial passo-a-passo para começar fazendo mapas do Left 4 Dead usando o editor de level Hammer.
