Removing {{message}}
Should I continue to have my bot replace instances of {{message}}? I did so because of the message given on Valve Developer Community:Message transclusions. It's accurate most of the time, though it makes a few errors. If it's doing more harm than good, I should be able to revert its actions. ―Pee (talk) 20:13, 17 June 2024 (PDT)
- You can continue. I've somewhat given up on trying to fix it. PabloS (talk) 20:23, 17 June 2024 (PDT)
Mistake deletion
Seems that CrematorBot mistakenly deleted Team Fortress 2/Scripting/Script Functions and seems like only administators have the ability to undelete pages Nescius (talk) 12:38, 18 June 2024 (PDT)
- It deleted everything in that category, but I didn't particularly vet what was in it; feel free to ping me with any more pages that need undeletion. PabloS (talk) 12:40, 18 June 2024 (PDT)
- Team Fortress 2 Level Creation also mistakenly deleted. I wonder would it be possible for moderators to get the undelete pages privilege ? Considering we can delete them undelete would be good to have Nescius (talk) 18:04, 22 June 2024 (PDT)
Removal of my mod submission
Heya, at this point I don't see any point running anymore. If I was accepted I would be a mod in a wiki full of people who despise me for being an editor who followed standards set by others. I'd like my request to be removed, as there's just no point. I don't really see a point of me even being an editor anymore if every action I take will be likely attacked if it so much as brushes any topic that these users hate. Unless I fit the exact mold that they want, there's not even a chance in hell I'd be welcomed here. -Equalizer (talk) 16:31, 18 June 2024 (PDT)
Protection levels
Hi! While getting acquainted with the moderation tools, I noticed that the protection levels that moderators can set are rather limited (I only see 2 levels). Is there an ability to have a protection level that, when set, only allows moderators and administrators to edit a page? I think moderators should have their user's page protected to prevent vandalism in case of retaliation from other users and also be able to protect any pages that need temporary protecting in case of large amounts of vandalism, which would give us the opportunity and time to clean things up. Let me know what you think and what solutions can be implemented.
Also, it may or may not be a local issue, but the preview button is not working for me, on every page, and returns the following error:
An error occurred while attempting to preview your changes. API error: unknown_useskin
Attempted on 2 different browsers and 2 different computers. Peter Brev (talk) 09:14, 19 June 2024 (PDT)
- I'm not able to do some technical stuff due to not presently having access to the wiki server right now, so I can't fix protection level issues. As for the preview button, it seems to be working on my end. PabloS (talk) 11:44, 19 June 2024 (PDT)
Sidebar translation
I was wondering if you could change the Croatian parts on the Workshop section, since "Alati za radionicu (game)" isn't ideal, but changing into this is better "Alati za (game)".
(saving you some time: MediaWiki:Hlatools/hr, MediaWiki:Dota2tools/hr, MediaWiki:Vrtools/hr, MediaWiki:Hlatools/hr, MediaWiki:Cs2tools/hr ) --N0one (talk) 06:06, 19 June 2024 (PDT)
Some of the strings at Valve Developer Community:Translators' noticeboard could also probably be added, even if they weren't completely finished.
Rollback button
As moderator I now see a rollback button. Not completely sure how is it different from undo but it has no confirmation when clicking on it. I somehow accidentally clicked it on two occasions as I am scrolling on phone. If possible confirmation should be added to that Nescius (talk) 16:02, 22 June 2024 (PDT)
- Rollback allows to undo multiple edits at once and restores the page to the last edit of your choice. The undo button will only take care of the last edit.Peter Brev (talk) 14:30, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- The rollback button's purpose is to not have a confirmation; it's meant to revert multiple edits by the same person at once. PabloS (talk) 16:18, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- Not having confirmation makes it very easy to missclick on phone and instantly revert stuff when scrolling through recent changes. Doesn't make much sense to me why there isn't simple "yes/no" for that and how it would affect its purpose to revert multiple edits. Nescius (talk) 16:30, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Rollback. PabloS (talk) 16:33, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- Based on what I found in the article I should be able to do something like this Special:MyPage/common.css if I understand correctly and put css in there that hides the rollback link for me. Is it something that's possible here or am I misunderstanding it completely ? Nescius (talk) 17:00, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- That should work. PabloS (talk) 17:14, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- I tried this and User:Nescius/common.css doesn't seem like it works. Tried reloading and clearing the cache. I assume this option is false on this wiki ? Nescius (talk) 17:21, 23 June 2024 (PDT)

Problems with images in categories
Here are the problems you may encounter:
- Blurry small images due to bilinear resampling by default (see example);
- Lots of light colored images (icons and other) that are not visible on a white background (see example).
Solution:
- It's worth trying
image-rendering:pixelated
in MediaWiki:Common.css; - Just change the background color of the images to something slightly lighter or darker than the page background.
Code Example:

Siderbar translation
Hi! Could you please update the following translations?
- MediaWiki:workshop/pt-br -> Oficina
- MediaWiki:hlsdk/pt-br -> SDK do Half-Life
- MediaWiki:hlatools/pt-br -> Ferramentas do Half-Life: Alyx
- MediaWiki:dota2tools/pt-br -> Ferramentas do Dota 2
- MediaWiki:vrtools/pt-br -> Ferramentas do SteamVR
- MediaWiki:cs2tools/pt-br -> Ferramentas do Counter-Strike 2
Thanks. Tark (talk) 09:43, 25 June 2024 (PDT)
Sidebar translations finished for now
The Chinese and German translations for the sidebar at the Valve Developer Community:Translators' noticeboard are finally finished, and should be added. This covers all the languages that are likely to be translated any time soon. Also due to the addition of the Workshop section, I was wondering whether the words "Workshop" could be removed from all the Finnish translations, ie. "Half-Life: Alyx Workshop Työkalut" -> "Half-Life: Alyx Työkalut" Wisdurm (talk) 14:17, 4 July 2024 (PDT)
Request
Would like to request moderator role for my 2nd account User:Nesciuse used to make automated actions. Would that be fine ? Don't want to clutter my own contribution history when some automated actions require moderator rights Nescius (talk) 04:44, 8 July 2024 (PDT)
New role
Would it be possible to add new role called 'Trusted user' and ability for moderators to protect pages so that at least 'Trusted user' is required to edit and for moderators to be able to grant give this role ? There are some templates that are on many pages and editing them is essentially editing thousands pages at once so it would be useful for such protection on those templates. Nescius (talk) 05:52, 13 July 2024 (PDT)
common.css
I've put suggestion for useful common.css addition MediaWiki_talk:Common.css#css_to_hide_.28en.29_part_of_language_links so putting message here to bump it Nescius (talk) 11:58, 18 July 2024 (PDT)

Mistake Deletion
My profile picture was deleted by CrematorBot. It said in the log it is a "Page Cleanup". -Davidson713 —Unsigned comment added by DavidSon713 (talk • contribs) 18:10, 9 September 2024 (PTC) Always sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~

Giving ficool2 moderator rights
Coudl you elaborate why you've done it? This is a mistake. Regardless of their contribution to the development of a commonly used tool, they've a proven bad track record in the community (transphobic comments, bigotry), have been banned from numerous large community places (Knockout, Discord servers such as Map Labs) and should not have elevated rights on this wiki. Cvoxalury (talk) 04:16, 2 November 2024 (PDT)
- It's been over 3 years (and I was underage at the time), I think it's time to let go of a grudge. --Ficool2 (talk) 08:11, 2 November 2024 (PDT)
- If you can show signs of reform. Everyone should be given an opportunity to reform, but they need to work on that, not just sit there. In the end, PabloS can decide how much that's worth.
- Since I was asked about evidence:
- The Knockout acc. Can see the posts and in "Mutes" can see the ban assigned.
- The (long but substantial) example of arguing in bad faith.
- These aren't the only ones that happened, but the quickest for me to pull up. They are a few years old; but since then we haven't seen evidence of change, either. They're been careful around public; personally I dont' take it as a sign of regret. Moreover, the controversy around the person is still quite fresh. The ban on Map Labs was just this year (over both this same subject and attitude in general). It wasn't formally waved around so I can't really screenshot when that happened. Cvoxalury (talk) 11:00, 2 November 2024 (PDT)
- Per correspondence with a Map Labs administrator, I've rescinded the offer of moderator rights to ficool2. Having advanced permissions, in my eyes, requires that the community around where you have those permissions trusts and respects you; I now know that is not the case. I don't think it's worth blocking ficool2, but with the kind of track record I'm now aware of, I don't see it fit to give them permissions at this time. PabloS (talk) 18:32, 2 November 2024 (PDT)
Deletion of my User Page cover image
Before I changed my user Page, I had a image that I used as my background image for all my user pages. My phone was recently reset and I lost many photos that I forgot to back up, including the image that used to be my background image. If possible, could that be restored at least temporarily so I could download the image back to my device? I would greatly appreciate it. -Equalizer, aka the better pickaxe (talk) 15:25, 6 November 2024 (PST)
- Just listing below all the images you used that I was able to find:
- User Covers: Stanley Parable, Evening scene.
- THE OWL (talk) 10:11, 7 November 2024 (PST)
- Oh, thank you THE OWL. I was looking for the second evening image. -Equalizer, aka the better pickaxe (talk) 10:42, 7 November 2024 (PST)
new wiki version
With new wiki version for whatever reason {{ROOTPAGENAME}} doesn't work properly in Category namespace. For example on Category:De/TODO {{ROOTPAGENAME}} gives De/TODO while before it correctly gave just De. Not sure if it's a bug or intended to work differently in that namespace. {{#titleparts: {{PAGENAME}} | 1 }} works correctly luckily --Nescius (talk) 07:02, 28 November 2024 (PST)
- Noted. Unlikely that this will be fixed. --PabloS (talk) 10:52, 28 November 2024 (PST)
- I assume it's because subpages are disabled for category namespace on this wiki ? https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgNamespacesWithSubpages (Should I move this topic to the admin noticeboard for any future replies to this particular issue ?) --Nescius (talk) 11:55, 28 November 2024 (PST)
Also, it seems image uploads are broken now; I get this error when I try to upload anything (tried png, jpg, and newly added webp): Could not create directory "mwstore://local-backend/local-public/d/dd".
— SirYodaJedi (talk) 09:37, 28 November 2024 (PST)
- This should be fixed, try again.
Please use Valve Developer Community:Administrators' noticeboard for these type of issues. --PabloS (talk) 10:52, 28 November 2024 (PST)
