Valve Developer Community:Moderator elections
Hi: You have been accepted as a moderator. Please be sure to read up on Help:Etiquette and Valve Developer Community:Terms of Use.
I'd also personally recommend that you set your signature to your name or on-wiki username just to minimise confusion. PabloS (talk) 12:18, 18 June 2024 (PDT)
Stopping THE OWL
Hi.
I'm here to ask you to block THE OWL to prevent any further damage to the wiki.
I'm sure you've seen the discussions during the Moderator elections.
- They've shown time and time again that they do not want to listen and back up. They claimed they want to fix their mess or go away, but the next day they start asking for more and more changes and access.
- The Valve contractor admin already called out their mess as unholy and singlehandedly causing havok, yet it doesn't seem to calm them down the slightest. The promise of 'I'll continue working in July' sounds nothing short of a threat at this point.
- They want to change things while appealing to strawman argument like 'all modern designers'.
- Now they even directly admit they're trolling. ("I'm just messing with you")
For the best of the wiki and to prevent any more tampering, please take action.
P. S. I apologise if I'm misusing your own talk page for this moderation appeal. I'm not sure where they would otherwise go, these kinds of requests? Should I instead host it on the Noticeboard? Cvoxalury (talk) 05:18, 19 June 2024 (PDT)
- Hi! You and everyone else are welcomed to use my talk page for this. There is no restriction really. I have monitored the situation for a while now and seeing the recent discussions, it seems clear to me that THE OWL is at the center of attention and multiple people seem unhappy with the wiki updates. I also have a hard time seeing what page I should go to to make a simple minor edit due to nested templates. After careful consideration, I have blocked this user temporarily. Let me know if things do not seem to improve moving forward. Peter Brev (talk) 06:27, 19 June 2024 (PDT)
- Aaand we're back. User:THE OWL can't stop meddling with things that affect hundreds of pages at once; this time it's the tabs template. Again "I don't like that", again "I'll solve this later". Cvoxalury (talk) 01:22, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- Please note that I just updated my own template (actually, it's for everyone, but it hasn't changed much since it was created), taking the design from my sandbox. What is the main problem with updating a template? It's that I started shipping a big update again, splitting it into parts (I'll try to eliminate this bad habit of mine). Did it ruin the template? No.
- I also ask you to consider the user above's love of all things ancient. I may not have finished the job, but the template didn't ruin anything, and the user himself brazenly canceled the changes without even discussing anything. At the very least, my update matches the current state of the English Wikipedia, which also has similar tabs for buttons above the title.
- Also, please don't miss my reply to this user on the template discussion page. It's a bit rough, but I can't do otherwise anymore. They tell me I'm messing things up, but at the same time, they change my ideas for my ideas. It's weird.

- I have replied in the tabs template talk page. In short, I see people taking issue with the template edits, and as I mentioned in the talk page, content uploaded here belongs to the wikiers. Anything can be edited by anyone. If this is not something you like, you should not be posting. Don't hesitate to contact me if further discussion is needed.-- Peter Brev (talk) 08:33, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- I see you blocked him for 7 days but I don't see anything block worthy this time. There was no edit warring or disputed edits. His change was reverted and he didn't revert it back. Nobody objected to changes of tabs template before either. The only thing he did is saying he will do further edits to finish the template later which does not fall under any of those. The block feels unwarranted at this moment. Nescius (talk) 10:05, 23 June 2024 (PDT)
- Yes, that was a little excessive on my part due to a lack of time on my end to properly evaluate the situation. I removed the block. Apologies for the inconvenience.--Peter Brev (talk) 14:18, 23 June 2024 (PDT)

Limiting upload rights
Hello again. Are you able to affect other users' upload permissions?
There's User:MyGamepedia who seems to have a habit of shamelessly uploading multi-mb gifs to illustrate things on BMS-related pages. At first I saw a couple and wrote about the on Reasons for speedy deletion, then I noticed it goes far deeper.
Check NewLight_Point/en, for example. From the history it's obvious they are the main contributor, and it's filled with huge pics (mostly poor quality, with developer strings and HUD on) and heavy gifs that illustrate some one particular point like a minor shadow bug. Even their tiny, 320p gifs easily add 5 megs to the page.
If their upload permissions can be changed, I suggest forbidding uploads entirely. They were already warned about gifs months ago on their talk page, nothing seems to have changed. Cvoxalury (talk) 11:37, 21 June 2024 (PDT)
- Hey again! Sorry for the delayed response. I checked the user's contributions and can see what is going on. I checked what tools I had to stop this, but I don't have the power to alter a user's permissions --I would need full admin permissions otherwise. The best I can do is block/ban and remove (including mass delete) contributions. I sadly can't check all the uploaded gifs and images, but are all those file uploads used in articles? If not, they needlessly take space on the database for no reason and I'll delete them. I'll send them a message as well about that. I'm getting a lot of database errors from the VDC, including 502 errors and have a hard time navagating the site.Peter Brev (talk) 03:13, 22 June 2024 (PDT)
- I'm having a lot of trouble accessing VDC today, so I can't check many files, I believe majority of them is used on articles pertaining to Black Mesa documentation. On the link I provided above, which is sorted starting from the largest file, the first 20 are already taking up 1106 megabytes combined. Over a gigabyte. For documenting mostly visual fx or some bugs. That is so bad. As seen in the recent edit war on the env_ragdoll_bogie (which I took some part in, I shouldn't have, but I lost track briefly, I'm sorr), the user thinks it's all fine. Of course for them it would look fine if the files loaded for them once and got cached in the browser.
- Deleting many of these files would work but then would leave blank links on the pages. But they should never have been used to document it in that way to begin with... there's been chronic abuse of including files and the gallery template. Cvoxalury (talk) 04:43, 22 June 2024 (PDT)
- Same here, VDC is very slow, simple page took forever to load and then I randomly got 502 error. GIF are very terrible for previewing stuff like this, wish this wiki would support embedding YouTube videos for previewing the bug directly (so far there's only workaround right now is to post link to the YT video itself). --leonidakarlach (talk) 05:43, 22 June 2024 (PDT)
- I have to agree that those gifs are too heavy. Even if the Internet speeds have improved, many being on fiber including myself, there still are folks who don't have that luxury of fast Internet; besides, the wiki needs to be fast, organized and quickly accessible to find information. I understand that User:MyGamepedia has put in a lot of work in the gifs, but I believe their recordings can easily be put on YouTube. Current gifs can be replaced with 2 JPGs showing a before and after-- which should only be a few kilobytes by this point, and adding the corresponding YouTube video with those JPGs. Since the gifs are used in articles, deleting them just doesn't sound like the appropriate solution. They'll need to port their gifs to YouTube and then I can safely remove those gifs from the database. As for the edit warring, I'll drop a note on their talk page since they requested a moderator's response. Let me know if that sounds a reasonable solution to you. If you have alternatives, feel free to share them with me. The goal is that we all find a the right compromise. --Peter Brev (talk) 13:48, 22 June 2024 (PDT)
- Appreciate you looking into this so swiftly. To clarify, for speedy deletion I only nominated those gifs that were not included on any page. There were still too-heavy ones that were used, I left them alone. Cvoxalury (talk) 16:08, 22 June 2024 (PDT)
- When I checked pages that needed speedy deletion, I could only see one file needing deletion. Did I miss the files where you requested speedy deletion? --Peter Brev (talk) 00:45, 23 June 2024 (PDT)

Delete the file
I once experimented with optimizing animated images and using them on pages. Nothing much came of it, and there were no moderators or administrators to remove such files. I am now asking you to delete Making a basic shader.gif. -- THE OWL 14:37, 22 Jun 2024 (UTC)
- I have deleted the file on request.- Peter Brev (talk) 13:28, 22 June 2024 (PDT)
