It is a modified version of the CS:GO engine branch that combines many of the features present in both Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Portal 2, along with making various improvements to the engine that bring Source close to modern standards.

History

Development on Strata Source commenced in Late 2020 as a community made fork of the CS:GO engine branch CS:GO engine branch with features from Portal 2 Portal 2 backported. Initially known as 'Chaos Source', the project was the result of a joint collaboration between the mod teams responsible for the Momentum Mod Momentum Mod and Portal 2: Community Edition Portal 2: Community Edition modifications respectively. The team, known at the time as 'Chaos Studios', envisioned a version of the Source Engine that fostered an 'open and sharing community' with respect to all Source Engine licensees.

As of 2023, in an effort to improve the branding of the engine branch, the team behind Chaos Source renamed the engine to what is now known as 'Strata Source', per the input and feedback of the project's members.
