Team Fortress 2 is the follow-up to both
Team Fortress Classic and the original
Quake mod,
Team Fortress. The game was originally released and only available with The Orange Box package.

The console version of the game received minor updates (all bug fixes) until March 19, 2008 (for PlayStation 3) and July 21, 2009 (for Xbox 360), but do not receive major updates like Gold Rush Update (which are exclusive to PC only when released in April 2008). PC version on the other hand, have been over 800+ updates since the game's release, including major updates like Jungle Inferno (in 2017). As of today, the game is still receiving some updates.
Team Fortress 2 originally runs on Source 2007 on all platforms, but on PC, it was later upgraded to Source 2009 in 2009, then Source Multiplayer in October 2011, Source 2013 Multiplayer in 2013 (during SteamPipe), and finally has it's own branch (Team Fortress 2 branch) since 2022, which eventually later it succeeded Source 2013 Multiplayer (after all games on that branch was upgraded to TF2 branch).
Since June 2011, Team Fortress 2 is now available for free, separated from The Orange Box.
On April 19, 2024, an engine update was released which features many changes, including 64-bit support (allowing more than 4GB RAM to be used), DXVK integration, WebM (replacing Bink video & codec support, x64 only), Miles Sound System being replaced with MiniMP3, emoji support in chat (for Linux)[2], VPhysics optimization from Left 4 Dead engine branch, and better performance[1]. The 64-bit update is not available for macOS users, however. Team Fortress 2 has its own updated version of Source 2013 Multiplayer branch called the Team Fortress 2 branch, which adds these above features. - Due to deprecation of
YouTube API v2[4], it is impossible to upload Replays to YouTube in-game, making these achievements (Home Movie, Local Cinema Star, Indie Film Sensation and Blockbuster), impossible to achieve in the intended way.
