About this page and the PlayStation 3 game console

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a home video game console developed and marketed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The successor to the PlayStation 2 PlayStation 2, it is part of the PlayStation brand of consoles. It was first released on November 11, 2006, in Japan, November 17, 2006, in North America, and March 23, 2007, in Europe and Australia. The PlayStation 3 competed primarily against Microsoft's Xbox 360 Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii as part of the seventh generation of video game consoles.

The console is infamous for it's high prices ($499 for 20GB and $599 for 60GB model), lack of quality games and most importantly, complex processor architecture. With the high prices during it's launch, the systems had a slow start in the market, but eventually recovered with the introduction of the Slim model, which sells for much cheaper prices ($299).

As mentioned above, due to the complex processor architecture used on PS3, known as Cell Broadband Engine, most video games made or ported to the PS3 during it's early days (including The Orange Box The Orange Box) suffered from poor performance, compared to it's competitor at the time, Xbox 360, due to developers at the time doesn't know how to take advantage most of the Synergistic Processing Elements (SPE) cores on the Cell processor. Later games eventually took advantage of all of the SPE cores as Sony improving their documentation and console SDKs, which led to Portal 2 Portal 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive finally being released on the PlayStation 3 PlayStation 3 systems, and run with no issues.

The PlayStation 3 PlayStation 3 is also the only console that was integrated with Steamworks, used in Portal 2 Portal 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Steam servers for PlayStation 3 PlayStation 3 have been shut down.
