Explosions and pitched roofs

umm i ended my page- i got bored. anyone got any advice on making explosions without loads of "specialised" (i.e. having to go through a series of windows etc) thanks please leave a comment at my page please and does anyone know how to make pitched roofs? answer at my page please

--game4ever

For explosions, you will want an env_explosion entity. For pitched roofs, you will want to be using the clip tool and the vertex manipulation tool. You might find the Abstract Mapping page useful - it tries to categorise things according to their real world equivalents. It can be easier to find what you are looking for there than wading through the list of entities.
Also, you might find the VERC forums useful, since they have more people on hand to answer questions (whereas this is mostly just a resource for browsing). Giles 05:12, 18 Apr 2006 (PDT)

Dude! Learn to write a decent message

It's just horrible to read your messages... -- dutchmega

they have improved A LOT! i found myself editing a post i made when i first entered the community! Game4ever 13:00, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)

About your messages

I thought I would pop by your talk page and try and explain why people are getting annoyed with your contributions.

A Wiki isn't like a normal message board or chat room or website or anything like that. It's about a group of people working together to create a collection of information on a topic. With that in mind, there are two things (and, I think, only two things) that matter:

  • 1) The quality of the information available to those reading the Wiki.
  • 2) How easily the people reading the Wiki can find that information.

The first important thing to know, with these points in mind, is that you shouldn't take personal offence from anything relating to what you do on the Wiki. There just isn't anything to be gained by getting angry or upset.

The second point is that because these are the only two things that matter, it does matter how you write your messages. It's absolutely fine to talk however you want on your User page and on people's talk pages. The problem is that when it comes to everything else, a certain standard of presentation has to be followed to keep the quality of information high. While the texting/MSN style you use seems perfectly natural to you, to people who are older than you, it's difficult to read. It makes you come across badly because of this. When you use it on proper Wiki pages, it makes the Wiki come across badly.

With regards your Creating Doors page, it was flagged for deletion because there are already other pages that do that job, as indicated by the link to Doors. To have duplicate pages on the Wiki is confusing for people trying to find the information they want, so having a second page about doors breaks the 2nd rule above.

Giles 13:47, 24 Apr 2006 (PDT)

Look, I don't want to offend you, I really don't, but if you want to help people, you should make sure that everyone can read your messages without any trouble. This Wiki has some rules and you must obey them when you post here. -- dutchmega
Ditto with everything Giles just said. In addition to
While the texting/MSN style you use seems perfectly natural to you, to people who are older than you, it's difficult to read.
I'd like to stress that only a fraction of this wiki's readers are native speakers of English. I'm not, and find it extremely difficult to understand your messages Game4ever. I'd imagine a lot of other people also have this limited understanding and so I beg you to stop that leetspeek. Here in Finland, we have a saying:
Maassa maan tavalla.
To put its idea brief in English: Their way, not yours. If/when you travel somewhere, you'll have to live by your host's rules. The same applies here, this wiki is your host... Show some respect for it. Jupix 06:49, 25 Apr 2006 (PDT)
thanks, that was advice well given. i have taken it to heart, but will keep this page on through all my deletes... Game4ever 13:01, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)

Making a button for your door

I saw in Dutchmega's Talk page that you would like a button to open your door... Well it's so simple you'll say 'a-ha' when I'm done talking ;) Here it goes:

First, make yourself a box with a door brush (or whatever you would like your door te be).
Second, Tie that to the entitie Func_door_rotating or Func_door, and give it a name like door1.
Third, make the button. This must be a different box+brush and also has to have another name (like door1_button).
Then, put an output on the button, which you've tied to the entity called Func_button. The output has this:
OnPress | door1 | Open | <none> | 0.00 | Not signed (fire once)
Now press Apply and test your map :D Don't forget to put the right properties to the door...!

Hopes this helped ^^ --CrabbyData 15:26, 6 May 2006 (PDT)

EDIT: I've made a .bsp and a .vmf, just for you ^^ You can download it here. I've only tested it in Counter Strike: Source! But it should work in HL2...
(If the link is dead, email me at [email protected]) --CrabbyData 03:25, 7 May 2006 (PDT)

Note.pngNote:Place the .bsp in C:\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\--username--\counter-strike source\cstrike\maps (or other game directory)

Do you even know how to write formally?

If you want to post on actual articles...do it as if you're writing a paper..and don't sign your changes—ts2do 13:41, 24 May 2006 (PDT)

okay. and i dont write formally EVER. ill learn eventually though. hopefully. Game4ever 13:56, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
Sorry Game4ever, I don't mean this offensive, but although you are a very nice person, I think you're just not suited to contribute to this wiki... I think more people will agree with me on this. Your posts and edits do not follow the wiki-markup-rules, and it's a hell of a lot work for e.g. ts2do and me to edit all your changes. I'm sorry my friend but:

{{Minor Spammer}}

You're not a real spammer, but more unsuited for the job of contributing... Sorry, mate. The only option is to adjust your writing right away like using normal signatures (like below), don't sign your edits and make normal edits, which follow the POV-rule... --CrabbyData 14:03, 24 May 2006 (PDT)
what are the POV rules? Game4ever 13:07, 26 May 2006 (PDT)
Point of View is a Half-Life mod XD No, serious, POV means indeed Point of View, which is a rule at Wiki-websites. Search the main Wiki for how to write articles with a POV... Most used here is the NPOV, Neutral Point of View. --CrabbyData 13:34, 26 May 2006 (PDT)
ummm.... please take me off the spammers list?. im much better now? Game4ever 04:55, 17 Jun 2006 (PDT)

sorry to anyone out there I have offended with my 14-year-old grammar, logic, philosophy and writing style. I hope I am improving, if not, feel free to edit or delete any posts I make. Game4ever 13:23, 26 May 2006 (PDT)

Adding custom sounds to map

Yo Game4ever, I've found a tutorial about adding custom sounds to a map: Click here for the tut. --CrabbyData 15:05, 3 Jun 2006 (PDT)

super physcannon?

is there a physcannon with a huge maxmass? you know, like near the end of the game and you get the really powerful physcannon? how can i get that in my map? Game4ever 12:55, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)

enable global "super_phys_gun"—ts2do 12:57, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)
confundicated!(confused) what the heck???? Game4ever 13:09, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)
If you can't find it, then just figure a way around it... Maps doesn't have to be perfect, else CS:S wouldn't have been release in 30 centuries :P --CrabbyData 13:17, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)
i know, i dont really need it, but its cool! so i need it... Game4ever 13:51, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)
As ts2do says, you need to set a global variable to turn the normal gravity gun into the super (blue) one. To do this, use an env_global entity. --Giles 14:04, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)
thanks giles, i didnt have a clue what a global was... Game4ever 09:14, 15 Jun 2006 (PDT)
will it work in hl2dm? Game4ever 02:49, 19 Jul 2006 (PDT)

No, HL2DM doesn't have any superphyscannon code. --dutchmega 03:19, 19 Jul 2006 (PDT)

s*** thanks anyway Game4ever 03:32, 19 Jul 2006 (PDT)

umm...., help, anyone?

how many problems do i have? and yes, i know i should go somewhere else to get my advice and help, but i know you lot, so....

the problem is, i want to hang a func_physbox from some ropes. i have tried this before, but it didnt work, the physbox simply fell through the ropes... any ideas? Game4ever 10:26, 15 Jun 2006 (PDT)
For one (or even more) time, godsake, search on google... http://www.hl2world.com/wiki/index.php/Hanging_Objects --CrabbyData 10:59, 15 Jun 2006 (PDT)
um, sorry..... ill search google. it just takes so much damned time Game4ever 07:49, 16 Jun 2006 (PDT)
Try the Community Portal to find other (tutorial-)sites related to mapping and other things --CrabbyData 08:17, 16 Jun 2006 (PDT)
btw i hate searching google. it brings up so many irrelevant files/folders. Game4ever 10:34, 18 Jul 2006 (PDT)

good solution!

i came up with a really inventive solution to my ropes problem-i made some 'chains' out of brushes, and turned them into physboxes. ill put a picture in soon, i hope! Game4ever 03:44, 17 Jun 2006 (PDT) Tow0009.jpg

the above picture is the chains i made Game4ever 06:18, 17 Jun 2006 (PDT)

A couple of comments:

  • Please use capital letters where appropriate, when editing the proper Wiki pages. I did a quick Google and found a page that seems to cover the basics.
  • Your chains are quite fun - good job on getting them working - but they will probably make the game run slower than it needs to. If you want to learn how to hang things by rope the way Valve intended, you might like to look at an example from how they did it themselves. You remember early in HL2, you come across some swings in City 17? That map is included with the SDK, so you can look at it in Hammer and see how they did it. It's in steam/SteamApps/game4ever/sourcesdk_content/hl2/mapsrc and it's called sdk_d1_trainstation_02.vmf. The entities are involved are quite complicated, so it's probably easiest if you copy and paste the swing and all its entities out of that map and into yours. Then you can learn how it works by gradually make changes to it, rather than trying to learn it all at once and reproduce it from memory. --Giles 02:10, 18 Jun 2006 (PDT)
thanks! and i am looking at the web page you found. Unfortunately, i have become attached to my chains, so i will use them. they dont slow the game down at all, so thats good. Game4ever 08:13, 18 Jun 2006 (PDT)
Well, not in this case.. I think your map is quite small right now, when expending the map to a bigger format then I think you will see the difference. --Jurgen Knops 08:34, 18 Jun 2006 (PDT)
Probably.... I dont go in for big maps though, I always run out of ideas or it goes wrong... Game4ever 11:48, 18 Jun 2006 (PDT)

Then learn where the shift button is—ts2do 13:35, 21 Jun 2006 (PDT)

And where the dictionarys lie... :P Ts2do just points out that you're English is below average and also below the Wiki-standards... I'm born in the Netherlands, and my primary language is Dutch... But, as I say myself, my English is even better than yours...(!) --CrabbyData 16:10, 21 Jun 2006 (PDT)

Well if it is, you sure don't show it here, so start showing it here!!!—ts2do 18:44, 21 Jun 2006 (PDT)

I suppose that was @ game4ever? --CrabbyData 04:17, 22 Jun 2006 (PDT)
Theres probably a reason why Crabbydata's english is better than mine: because crabbydata will have learned the 'queens' english, but I will have learned a dialect from where I live. English is quite a wierd language, because of multiple accents, dialects and so on and so forth. i have learned 'Wigan' english and leetspeek as well. So sorry guys! Im probably a lost cause! Game4ever 07:48, 22 Jun 2006 (PDT)
If you can't write proper English because you've learnt a broken version of the language, learn to write properly before writing encyclopedic text. That's what we did. You won't get any "get outta jail free cards" for natively speaking some kind of English if it is actually nowhere near what you should actually be writing. Jupix 05:17, 23 Jun 2006 (PDT)
I even come from a different country, and my Dutch is also different of that of the rest of the people here... Ok, don't know what the majority of the difficult words in English mean (neither in Dutch), but I CAN write formally (if that is the word for correct, nice, neat and near perfect making-sentences) --CrabbyData 10:50, 22 Jun 2006 (PDT)
same here. im writing a tutorial a door creation see if you like it? Game4ever 10:38, 23 Jun 2006 (PDT)
(1) Use capitals. (2) Use interpunction (use of points, dots, comma's, lines and underscores(?)), 'cause that'll make your posts a lot easier to read. And (3) follow the TutPOV, like I put on that page of yours... --CrabbyData 10:55, 23 Jun 2006 (PDT)

Yes, the spammer-list --CrabbyData 10:51, 22 Jun 2006 (PDT)
Sorry, skip the last phrase... In a chat with Giles, we, or atleast I, came to the conclusion that you'll have to do something about your posts (as pointed out more than I can count) and your posting-style... --CrabbyData 11:52, 22 Jun 2006 (PDT)

speedy deletion

Will someone ACTUALLY delete all the speedy deletion pages? I keep ending up at them during my flicks through the 'random page' button and the ignomity is killing me Game4ever 09:51, 29 Jun 2006 (PDT)

This wiki is not for amusement... This is for searching useful information about the Source engine and everything around it... If you want to edit, alter or add something then just search for a page which you would like to add... And if you're pressing the link for random pages, then just press it again... (you can mark this topic for speedy deletion ;) ) --CrabbyData 00:13, 30 Jun 2006 (PDT)

A-ha... Ok, sorry 'bout that, I thought you where just pressing it for fun :P Just ignore the speedy deletion things... You could try the recent changes-page. That's also usefull from time to time. --CrabbyData 13:40, 2 Jul 2006 (PDT)

user:spammer.....

Can i get rid of the spammer tag or does someone else have to do it? Game4ever 08:46, 10 Jul 2006 (PDT)

It's your user page, you're welcome to make whatever edits to it you want, short of putting words into someone else's mouth and/or breaking the site rules. The worst that can happen is that you get into a "fight" over it with someone else (i.e. they keep putting it back and you keep removing it) and then a moderator ends up deciding which of you is correct. --Giles 11:42, 10 Jul 2006 (PDT)
