==''Scaling the Cabal: Valve's Design Process for Creating Half-Life 2''==
== Valve's GDC presentations available ==
''4 Dec 2005'': Last month Valve wrote a piece for Game Developer Magazine, ''Scaling the Cabal'' [http://www.gdmag.com/archive/nov05.htm]. The article covers their unusual system of several tight-knit 'cabal' groups each concentrating on their chunk of the game, rather than the standard system of each developer working on a wide area over the course of development. It also describes the ways in which they overcome the problems cabals present, and how the system changed from Half-Life 1 to 2. A fascinating read, especially having used the Source mod tools.
''February 29, 2008:'' Four of the presentations given by Valve at the [http://www.gdconf.com/ Game Developers Conference] are now available from [http://www.valvesoftware.com/publications.html their publications page]. They are:

You can download his slides [http://www.igda.jp/modules/mydownloads/visit.php?cid=2&lid=42 here (igda.jp)]. It's a must-read along with [[Making a MOD]].
''February 23, 2008:'' The Source 2007 version of SDK Base from which Source mods can run for cross-game compatibility is available now. To use it, assuming your code has been updated of course, simply change your mod's AppID to <code>218</code>.
