Yup, works :) Jupix 14:36, 3 Mar 2006 (PST)

Messages not appearing - a fix?

If you're one of the numerous people who aren't receiving the text messages in this map, please could you try validating your Steam cache files? I've no idea if this will fix the problem, but I think it may be worth a try. Whatever happens, please report back here... ;-) --Cargo Cult 08:35, 12 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Dear Mr. Foster: I love you. I want to start a fan club in your blessed name. Now hurry up and get this released! :) --- Campaignjunkie 16:55, 10 Jul 2005 (PDT)

And one of my favorites strike again! I didn't notice this one until reading the Someplace_Else space over here.. May I mention how much I love thee? No? Well, then just take my compliments! Oh, and hey CJ.. :) --SEThorian 22:33, 15 Jul 2005 (CET)

Ah, the creator of Someplace Else strikes again. I remember seeing this before, but making it into an official Steam News Update is good, real good. Keep up the good work there. Captain P 1:12, 18 Jul 2005 (CET)

Wow, this page is beating the Main Page by 23,000 views (at time of writing). Nice job! :D --Campaignjunkie 21:54, 1 Aug 2005 (PDT)

Adam, I just played through Minerva - nice work! Thoroughly enjoyable. :) I'm looking forward to the next episode. Chris Bokitch 13:40, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)

No lie, absolutely beautiful work. Not sure how my site helped but thanks for mentioning it in the credits. --wisemx 15:10, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)

A couple of months ago, I was pretty much tearing my hair out over the utter complexity of single-player HL2 mapping, and the singular lack of documentation on the subject. Fortunately, I found your site - and shortly afterwards, everything clicked. And my little geometry-test of a map (dubbed 'Flatulent Geographer', no less) grew into what you see today... --Cargo Cult 15:40, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)
Gosh, we're learning together, Good Better Best never let it Rest. ;-) --wisemx 17:54, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Great work! Had fun playing it. Looking forward to next episode as well. -- Shens 14:27, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Awesome level! I cant wait to continue. This is a supurb example of what hardwork on design, polishing, and balance can lead to. I like the story and the design , keep it up man! --Hyperion2010 15:01, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)

What can I say that hasn't been said already? Superb level design, witty banter via 'Mr Deus Ex Machina' and a healthy affirmation of my belief that Combine soldiers can offer a challenging fight. Encore. --Tequila 17:05, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Mr Deus Ex Machina? That's interesting, since I always imagined it was a woman. Perhaps that's just because I can't stop thinking of the observing guide as Miranda Zero though (who, incidentally, was played by Michelle Forbes - voice of Judith Mossman - in the recent attempted TV adaptation of Warren Ellis' Global Frequency series of graphic novels). I'm rambling. --Graham 17:57, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)
I always assumed it was a man too, until the guide referred to herself as Minerva / Athena. But I guess her condescending tone fits the role well, right? ;) --Campaignjunkie 23:03, 2 Sep 2005 (PDT)
I doubt Minerva is the man/woman's actual name. After all, (s)he's meant to be far older than any of this petty 'humanity' stuff. --TomEdwards 00:18, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)
Cancel that, "technology and violence are a girl's best friends". ;-) --TomEdwards 00:28, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)
Do continue with the plot speculation, I'm enjoying it immensely! Key questions: who (and what) is the message-sender? Who is the player? What is beneath the island? Speculate away!
Oh, and many thanks to everyone for the comments - I'm stunned by the overwhelmingly positive response the map's had so far... --Cargo Cult 08:37, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)
Seeing as you mentioned SS2/Marathon on the wiki page, I predict he/she/it's going to go rampant and the player will have to use some sekrit Combine device underground to restore her back to her old cynical self. But maybe I'm just crazy! :) --Campaignjunkie 11:31, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)
I'd hate to see an HL2 map delivered in hex... --TomEdwards 11:55, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)
'Twas very entertaining, though the combat seemed very monotonous (always healing up to 100 between fights, and dropping almost to nil during them). For the most part, MINERVA's participation, though more mischievously playful than precedents such as Durandal or SHODAN, was amusing. Yet I was dissapointed that MINERVA lacked comment when her faithful (but less obedient) toy strayed its path to investigate a dead-end vent. (Mother Miranda, where do baby manhacks come from?) --Demented 22:47, 4 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Hehe, I pressganged my younger brother into playing. He wanted to turn the music off and spent at least ten minutes trying to get through through the underground... --TomEdwards 08:18, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Today I let my 6 year old son play it, liked it so much I had to pull him away.--wisemx 08:46, 3 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Adam, are you in for some critics and bug reports? There's some minor points like the skybox with it's bad seaming and some music fragments that didn't flow into each other well (two playing at the same time) and things like that.

Anyway, that might've sound negative but the map is really good value. Those minor things didn't really distract from gameplay (I think it's because I'm a mapper I notice things like that). About the gameplay, I really like the combat, the use of enemies. No static placement but active searching and they all seemed to have a purpose. I think it's all well thought out and executed. Oh, and that black humor keeps me smiling. It was on the sattelite photo... have fun! Good job done there, with the whole game experience and presentation. Keep it up for your next map! --Captain P

Is there supposed to be messages? Because I hear the ZX beep and don't get anything :'(

wow Adam, this is really nice work. Too bad I had to decrease my video settings though :o. And I think I kinda skipped the last part (after the control panel in the cell storage area) because I walked too fast? Nonetheless, very nice job. --deathz0rz 12:13, 4 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Been looking forward to this since I heard of it. Too bad, I can't get HL2 to display any on-screen text except the credits. Sounds like others have the same problem. --Unq 20:08, 4 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Did you just extract it to your hl2 folder? --Demented 22:47, 4 Sep 2005 (PDT)
I'd really like to know what's going on here, so if anyone suffering from this bug could provide their operating system version, graphics card model and driver revision and some basic system specs I'd be very grateful. I'm wondering if it's some generalised HL2 bug I've tripped up on, so would like a bit more information to provide to the Relevant Authorities... ;-) --Cargo Cult 04:35, 7 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Pretty good. I've not seen many decent HL2 single player episodes as yet, but this was quite fun. Couple of nagging irritations though - the ladders that you can't climb are really annoying! I wanted to use them to get away from the manhacks and to go exploring underground but they were just scenery! If you put a ladder in your map, make sure you can climb it in future :P

The scary music was also really cool. --QmunkE 12:06, 5 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Absolutely fantastic

I got the link and immediately shared it with my 200+ members group, out of which a good 30 peeps have already started a cult in your name. We just want more asap ;) Great work, and thanks for the beautiful gaming experience.--Furyo 08:43, 7 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Run HL2 and all should be well. --TomEdwards 01:06, 7 Sep 2005 (PDT)

This is an awosome mod! I love it! it's alot more fun than the original HL2 :D and alot less creepy. Best of all, no zombies! :p

Great Map! More, Please...

Just wanted to post mentioning that the 'disappearing message problem' (which I had- it certainly made the endgame a bit more stressful, for sure! :P) may have been solved for most- apparently, the recent update(s) from Valve somehow fixed it- I get chapter titles in HL2 now as well! I didn't even know I was missing 'em...

I really like your presentation, BTW- nicely done, it looks and feels like a professional 'missionpack' more than a user-created map. And man, the use of the 'hacks to harass the player is done almost better than Valve! I've already replayed it several times, and it's just fun to try different avenues into the facility...

Funny AI glitch- I've never run into any of the other glitches reported below, like the 'stuck' dropship, but I did run into a really funny situation around the 'warehouse' area: I had a Combine prison guard who apparently had found a scuba attachment! I was out on the dock area, having 'removed' all opposition in/around the building, but I hadn't taken the elevator down yet; I was just chillin' because I could still hear a guard somewhere, but I couldn't find him. All of a sudden I get hit with a bullet from who knows where! I'm lookin' around, zooming etc., but I don't see a target, until I turn toward the sea! At which point I notice tracers coming from about a hundred 'yards' out in the water! I'm like WTF?! Combine got submarines? I just had to 'console/cheats 1/godmode' just to see what the heck was going on, so I went for a swim and there he is standing in 20 feet of water calmly firing away at me as I approach and crowbar him in the forehead, since unlike him my guns don't work under water!

Love this mod, keep it up! Now I gotta go play Someplace Else(please don't make us wait too long for part 2!) Thanks again for this excellent mod!

Cant Start.

Followed instructions. Extracted to proper folder but it constantly crashes. Have not gotten it to start once please help!

crashes for me as well

My hl2.exe crashes when I try to launch as well. Took the author's advice and checked my files and restarted, seemed to clear out the cobwebs. The game is running far better now.

All that said Minerva is an absolutely fantastic 1st episode. Looking forward to new entries.

In space!

What can this mean? :-o --TomEdwards 04:45, 16 Nov 2005 (PST)

Idle Thumbs

Adam gives a semi-interview to hip new gaming-journalism website Idle Thumbs. [1] Have to say, I was surprised, I didn't expect a modding feature to be on there. Nonetheless, well done, Adam! I guess this makes you a celebrity or something! ;) --Campaignjunkie (talk) 22:07, 16 Nov 2005 (PST)

Metastasis 2

Wooo! I think someone started using item_dynamic_resupplies. =O The combat, admittedly, is still fairly linear. There's only so much you can do with combine soldiers, I suppose. However, little things can spice up monotonous combat a lot. This one time, I was fighting some combine soldiers, was low on health, and a manhack arrived. Suffice to say I made an unfortunate charge into death's hands, merely to avoid that little red bugger, which definitely broke up my rather boring tactic of hiding behind a crate and spraying my smg until everything is dead. Also, MINERVA seemed to hint at a more "intellectual" route than bashing a door through. Was there one? --Demented 22:54, 3 Mar 2006 (PST)

Nice Work. SPOILER WARNING: What I heard is "Can't think of a more intellectual way". Which tells me that enabling the crane power is a prerequisite to get through that door (since manual swinging doesn't generate enough momentum). So how can the power be enabled? None of the two times three switches in the tunnel seem to work. --Lachnummer 14:54, 4 Mar 2006 (PST)

Hint: try doing things in order? —Cargo Cult (info, talk) 15:11, 4 Mar 2006 (PST)
That was quick. Thanks for the hint, it worked. At first I had the impression that the first 'switch' never changed state, but reloading shows me that it does indeed. --Lachnummer 16:05, 4 Mar 2006 (PST)

I got a little stuck at times: First, I swung and swung and swung that ram, over and over, thinking I were to break the door down manually, especially since the voice told me to. This was mainly because I ignored the two levers leading to the second button, thinking they were just props that didn't have any use. I think in HL2, these were marked ever so slightly by lights.

Secondly, I got stuck where she sais I'm in the wrong place, and should go back to some "power down shaft" or something: I made like TEN laps around the entire level, going back to the beginning of it, passing that energy barrier partly because I didn't have a gravgun to tamper with anything behind it, and MAINLY because it was guarded by a sentry gun that had me running for cover instead. If it weren't for the sentrygun, I would have investigated what the passage lead to.

Other than those moments of frustration, things were really good! =) --Andreasen 10:18, 5 Mar 2006 (PST)

Sentries are perfect grenade fodder, aren't they? (:-) Superb mod, thanks Adam! --Lachnummer 14:41, 5 Mar 2006 (PST)
I think you misunderstood: It wasn't because I had a hard time with the sentry, but because I didn't notice the plug because all I heard was the sentry reacting loudly to me, and then I just ran across the opening without much more than a glance at it. It was a sentry behind a field and that was that. The thought of having to waste a grenade at it just to take a peek at something I most likely wouldn't be able to get at, discouraged me from looking twice into the entrance. --Andreasen 16:09, 5 Mar 2006 (PST)

Stuck

I love the mod. Unbelievable detail and a great play. I can't, however, find the control room. I would greatly appreciate a hint, I want to finish this game. Slackhalyard

Go back to the three-pronged downlink chamber. The entrance is opposite the downlink beam on the longer wall. --TomEdwards 13:35, 21 Apr 2006 (PDT)
Thanks for the help. I knew I should'nt have trusted the 'voice' who warned me out of combat, but that's the only way to get to that door. Slackhalyard 15:35, 23 Apr 2006 (CDT)

Very impressed

I could not understand something in the end though - is it a bug or by design? I was slowly descending that long shaft with lots of crabs down below, when 3 combines run past me, ignoring me! He? then they just stood there doing nothing, until crabs got them (they shot a few though). Then i pressed the button and another 3 run down. Those did attack me. I thought it might be part of the story - that they were running down to contain the crab infestation, as they came when the lights started flickering and alarm sounded. Must have been a glitch. Never heard of them spawning twice. --TomEdwards 09:24, 2 Feb 2007 (PST)
