I volunteer... How?

in the "page" page of this discussion, it reads "if you would like to volunteer add your name to the bottom of this list"... how do i do that?

Thanks,

Kagegami
I have this same problem as well. Any solutions, anyone? 43kesseys 13:15, 10 August 2012 (PDT)
Actually, I just clicked "View Source" and got the message "You cannot edit this page because it has been locked". Anyone know why it's locked? 43kesseys 13:22, 10 August 2012 (PDT)
Try validating your email address before attempting to edit the page. It was previously protected against newcomer edits because of the DotA 2 beta test.—Mattshu 13:45, 10 August 2012 (PDT)

Same problem with me. I'm logged in too.

Current Events

The referenced page doesn't mention GDC or game testing. Referencing the Current Events page may not be a good idea in any case. —BJ(talk) 06:21, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

"If you build it, they will come"

I noticed over at Counter-Strike:_Source_Singleplayer that while it's a real struggle getting team members for mod production, there appears to be no shortage of people eager to volunteer to test new mods. Perhaps everyone already has people they can easily call on to test whatever they are working on, but you can never have too many testers (especially in a single-player context, where fresh eyes are invaluable), so this kind of list seemed like it would be a great resource for VDC users.

The success of this resource obviously depends on getting people to sign up though. Perhaps the phrase "build it and they will come" will prove true, or perhaps someone with a Steampowered Forums account should go over there and advertise it, or something?

Also, do we have an article on good playtesting practice yet? There's lots of really excellent material on the subject in Valve's GDC talks, if someone feels like writing it up and linking it in here and elsewhere. --Giles 05:35, 10 May 2006 (PDT)

I need to change some of my info.

So, it turns out my OLD email is listed here, and my description is kind of...outdated, we'll say.

I want to edit it, but it's protected, despite someone in History saying that people who had their name on the list had access to edit their names.

Can anyone help with this? Thanks. Unsigned comment added by Turtleey (talkcontribs). Please use four tildes (~~~~) to sign your username.

I can update it for you. Just post it here and I'll fix it. —Mattshu 22:36, 18 October 2011 (PDT)

Does anyone even look here?

Maybe we should add some more links to this page.. Hard to find. --dutchmega 01:48, 22 May 2006 (PDT)

Oh, most likley. I only found it by pressing random page. I do that to see if I can learn/contribute anything. anyway, yeah, more links! Id do it myself, but I never seem to do it right... --JeffMOD 07:14, 5 Apr 2008 (PDT)

Make it a category?

What about making this a category? And see my previous msg --dutchmega

I made it a page rather than a category because if someone wants to email a bunch of testers and say "hi do you want to test my mod", it's much easier to read emails off one page than to click through to half a dozen user pages to get everyone's emails. Regarding your prev msg above, I did link to it from Community Portal, because I felt much the same way. I can't think of anywhere else appropriate, but I'm sure others can. :) --Giles 10:37, 29 Aug 2006 (PDT)

Sorting

I think it would be best to list direct games and sort by those. I know if I was to be looking for testers I wouldn't care about their name but rather if they had the game for which the map was for. --Remmiz 10:47, 24 Nov 2007 (PST)

Indeed. This should be result in an extra column which tells the developers which games thoses testers owns. But I think when we put some new colums (i.e. "Games owned") on this list, it won't be updated for more then 50% cause the inactivity of many of those testers... --Jurgen Knops 06:23, 18 Feb 2008 (PST)

Spam Target?

Anyone else notice this is a lovely lil' spam email target for bots? Or am i just getting spamanoid. (Like being paranoid but from spam!) --JakeB 10:59, 24 Jun 2008 (PDT)

True, maybe a new template is in order, something like {{nospam|name|domain|tld}} and the template would put it together to "name@domain.tld". This will work until a spammer or a mail harvesting bot programmer stumbles across it and adjusts. --pizzahut 15:47, 24 Jun 2008 (PDT)

Actually this wouldn't help because the email address would still be in the HTML. Afaik spam harvesters can even interpret JavaScript and also understand encodings like "&#number;", also they know things like "name at domain dot tld". An email form like Wikipedia has might help (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/UserNameHere), however spam bots could email you through this system then if they manage to sign up - so there should be a CAPTCHA for creating a user account at the VDC wiki. Then there's the possibility to dynamically create an image that has the email address in it, but this is not suitable for blind people who may use some text-to-speech software. So best bet is wait for the wiki update that Valve is working on, I guess the current MediaWiki versions have this Special:EmailUser functionality integrated rather than it being a Wikipedia specific thing. --pizzahut 16:49, 24 Jun 2008 (PDT)

Category

This needs one.

I'd suggest something like "offering help/testers", and "offering help/modelers" etc.

thoughts? Kizzycocoa 18:13, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Kind of backwards

It seems like it would make more sense for mods to advertise for testers. If you are looking to beta test, just visit the websites of of some mods that interest you and ask.

So if I can get a plug in here, Fortress Forever is still taking applications and we value beta testers who can contribute their expertise, or just make it into the test server once a week. Apply here. cfoust 16:05, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Removing info

I'd like my name and email removed from this list as I think it's bringing spam to my email. Could anyone do this for me? Keyonte0 21:43, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Yeah or if the whole list could just be deleted since it is super outdated... --Amberjo (talk) 18:44, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Testers still needed?

Wanted to put myself as a voulanteer, but seems like its no longer possible. Valve no longer seeks for play testers here?

Seems that way. And with so many passionate gamers wanting to help, you'd think they'd keep it open for people to add their contact info to.

Time for this to come down

At nearly ten years old, I think it is time for this page to come down. It is no longer serving a useful purpose, and is just advertising a bunch of emails for bots to scam.
