Wow, I've been using Hammer for 4-5 years, and I didn't even know about the vertex scaling! --Campaignjunkie (talk) 20:06, 20 Nov 2005 (PST)

you know what vertex scaling does?...it scales the selection—ts2do (Talk | @) 20:07, 20 Nov 2005 (PST)

Mirror Image

Is there any way to reshape a solid into a mirror image of itself without having to do it manually? I find this very annoying.--Darthkillyou 14:45, 8 Aug 2007 (PDT)

Nope, you could make half of it, duplicate it and flip it and then notepad hack the vmf for it into 1 brush. But thats about it. --Angry Beaver 15:46, 8 Aug 2007 (PDT)

carving arch

Basically I have an arch, and I need to cut an opening in a wall to accommodate it. However Hammer likes to crash whenever I try to carve it. Anyone else have these issues?Unsigned comment added by Lancelot (talkcontribs). Please use four tildes (~~~~) or {{Message}} template to sign your username.

Don't carve, EVER. Use the clipping tool instead. Solokiller 11:20, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
Then what's the tool good for? --Lance
Making life easier for new mappers who couldn't easily do this otherwise.--1/4 Life 23:00, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
So how can I use the clipping tool to make an arch shaped hole? It looks like it just cuts whole shapes along a plane. --Lance
Read the information on the clipping tool that's on the wiki. For your specific need i'd say, create your arch, then in the 2D view, use the clipping tool to cut up a brush using the arch as a basis. You can also try modifying the arch with the vertex edit tool. Solokiller 13:18, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
Vertex seems like a better option, since I don't need it to follow the arch exactly. It just needs to not stick out. Much simpler. I'll see how that goes. --Lance
The carve tool is perfectly fine for rectangular brushes, anything more complex and the clipping tool should indeed be used. Further reading: [1] --Nacimota 19:43, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Carve Tool Edits

I've seen a lot of back and forth here on the carve tool subject, and decided to try and find a clean and helpful way to solve articulating what this tool does, and why it should be avoided for new users, thus I've trimmed the section down and put it all into a warning right below the header.

I'd also like to add that Ficool is an absolute dingus for using the carve tool in the way he does, and just because someone finds a way to use a masochistic tool in a somewhat helpful way does not at all make it viable or justified in a sane workflow. We should be teaching designers healthy habbits. If they want to explore the carve tool they should do it under the understanding that it can and will do much more harm than good, and in all honesty is not a replacement for any current workflow solution in Hammer. --M2VC (talk) 23:15, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
