Language Filters on Wiki

Is it possible to implement a language filter on wiki? I don't mean for swearing, I mean to block out articles that aren't in your normal language from being displayed in the recent changes and random pages. - RodeoClown 00:39, 20 Mar 2006 (PST)

  • I would have to say no, because the alternate language articles are in the main namespace. If we had a system set up like Wikipedia then they wouldn't even show up. The Valve staff hasn't even upgraded the wiki software since they installed it (apparently due to their customizations, but making diffs from the base code to the current version and then reimplementing them when they're done shouldn't be as hard..) Anyway, from a logical standpoint, I'd say they're probably not going to. But that's just me. They don't happen that much, either.. --AndrewNeo 13:40, 10 Apr 2006 (PDT)
Actually, the wiki software has been updated for security and bugfixes. An upgrade to a newer version of the software is forthcoming. Full version upgrades are not trivial, as Mediawiki often makes changes that break existing features, even if you have not made any customizations. For this reason we only makes updates when necessary. --JeffLane 19:16, 10 Apr 2006 (PDT)

I tend to agree that there should be something done about the language issue. One, it's pointless to have an example of something written in another language when you are looking for English. Two, it's annoying to do a search and have something come up not in english. Three, it would be easier for people of another language to find it, if it was in another section. Four, Since this is a mostly English forum, it makes it difficult to maintain the accuracy of posts made in another language. I think at least a seperation of English and non-english would be nice to have. --Carbonice 12:32, 3 May 2006 (PDT)

Are there any attempts to translate large sections into languages other than English? I'm keen to start working on a Japanese port if one doesn't already exist, if it does then where do I find it, and if it isn't then how do I start it?

New sidebar template

Since we have so many of the boxes I made to put at the top of games now (ex. Shadowgrounds has four) we should move to the same type of system Wikipedia uses, the sidebar (see Wikipedia:Half-Life 2 for example.) This way we could fit the name, a screenshot, release dates, mod status, and Steam URLs all in one place without six or so different templates. No specifics like Wikipedia (like system requirements and ESRB rating), we need to keep this a developer community and just link to Wikipedia for information like that. I'll begin designing the template and put it in my sandbox for demonstration and consideration in an hour or so. --AndrewNeo 17:20, 10 May 2006 (PDT)

Did you ever go anywhere with this? It would be alot cleaner for the titles. Wraiyth 02:42, 26 Jul 2006 (PDT)

Separate Wiki for Valve "Game" Community?

There are many articles about "playing" Valve/Steam games(title informations, bug feedbacks, character explanations, etc) lately. How about having a separate wiki for players? It would help many non-developers out there, while keeping VDC focused on development topics. --n-neko 23:21, 7 Jun 2006 (PDT)

I'm not convinced that the "playing" pages are actually hurting the VDC's focus on development topics. All the development articles are still there and accessible from all the same links and searches. There is already a place for players to discuss Valve's games, Wikipedia and several other Wikis. --Giles 01:44, 8 Jun 2006 (PDT)
  • I agree that it's not really diluting it any, but there is no reason for an official wiki when it comes to just the games. Like said above, there are lots of places to discuss the games themselves. --AndrewNeo 10:50, 14 Jun 2006 (PDT)

Does Valve get involved?

Not trying to be overly critical, but after looking through this wiki I wonder how much valve really cares about us, who are interested in working with the source engine. There seems to be no participation or commitment from valve whatsoever. Am I wrong? Not that we can't deal with things ourselfes, but I wonder if content wouldn't improve/increase if valve was more eager to help (read: browse around now and then and answer questions on topics that may be complex/difficult to understand), which in turn should make people more interested in the source engine.

  • Actually, after thinking about it, this critique mostly applies to the code section. Corner 14:07, 20 Jun 2006 (PDT)
  • Probably, Valve developers should have created something like a developers' blog. Blog is not meant here as a cool feature of the time, but as a definetely comfortable way of communication with the Valve team via comments and\or users' articles. Kith 02:55, 25 Jul 2006
They sometimes read the hlcoders list and working now on a SDK update. However a developer's blog would be nice. Better communication would avoid people thinking that Valve doesn't care. --dutchmega 02:47, 25 Jul 2006 (PDT)
  • This is one of the reasons I'm a bit turned off Source at the moment. I'm beta testing a game and engine by an indie dev (along with mod tools), and after having alot of contact with him over ICQ, helping out with documentation and him concisely answering any questions I've got... coming back to modding with Source seems tedious. Wraiyth 05:24, 25 Jul 2006 (PDT)
  • Does anyone know if somebody of Valve team has his own blog or smth. like that?
  • I painfully have to agree that while Valve is normally very community-oriented, they don't show much participation in this wiki. At least, not that we know of. On the other hand, you could say that Valve counts on the community to do half their work. No one would get HL2 if it didn't have any mods, CS and DOD were made by the community, and similarly, they count on the community to make the SDK documentation. When they're so busy working on additions to Half-Life 2, I suppose it's the only good way to do things.--Katana 13:52, 26 Aug 2006 (PDT)

Look here. --Darthkillyou 12:19, 21 Aug 2007 (PDT)

There are so many and complicated things that one can do with C code, that I would be surprised if a Valve employee, or any game company employee, sat down and wrote/debugged a portion of code for you. I've seen a lot of involvement from Jeff Lane - a level designer at Valve: Besides banning spammers and cleaning up spam at the wiki, he answers questions put to him at his dicussion page, and occationally makes adjustments to wiki pages. He's so much involved, in fact, that I find myself wondering who is designing levels for Episode Two. :) ...so yes, Valve cares about this wiki, more than I've seen a company care about a gaming community ... ever. After all, this wiki is the official manual to their game engine. I just think that helping out on coding would envolve them a little too heavily. --Andreasen 10:32, 28 Aug 2007 (PDT)

Info about Half-life in the Wiki?

I would really like to see info about Half-life editing in this wiki, like Half-life 2 but for Half-life. Solokiller 11:50, 11 Sep 2006 (PDT)

Yeah we dont have too much on HL1 yet non develop for it all that much anymore.--Gear 07:09, 19 Oct 2007 (PDT)

For MOD Developer Seekers

Right below "For Mod Teams" could we create a section "Looking for a MOD Team" for the individuals seeking a home? A few articles could be made on finding and evaluation teams, what to do when applying and provide mod teams a place to advertise for help. Something like:

  • Finding and evaluating MOD teams. Join Once, Join Right!
  • Help-Wanted: MOD teams currently looking for members.

Help-Wanted would be nice since MOD teams don't really have an official way of advertising for help. Plus we could break it up by where a team is in development for those only wanting to join MODs that have been around, or those that are just starting. Giving us a basic way to evaluate teams.

There is a Category: Help Wanted and Category: Help Available, linked from the Community Portal, where people can advertise for team members/teams. Guess some articles might be a good idea too. Feel free to start them and then see who adds to them. --Giles 04:21, 24 Dec 2006 (PST)

I am not sure where to ask as im just starting to use hammer for cs source my problem is makeing a buy zone the func_buyzone entity is not there so how do i create one?

Soundtrack page or...

What about we add a Soundtrack Listings page or maybe add the listings to each of the game's pages?

Like Half-Life 2's OST listings on Half-Life 2 and of the such.

Sounds good to me.--Gear 16:54, 23 Oct 2007 (PDT)

License

I was confused about the Licensing Valve Technology article, wondering if it referred to SourceTM or not. Trying to edit the talk page informed me that I should login to edit. On the main page it says "Sign up as a developer to contribute or to ask a question." So I tried to sign up to ask about using SourceTM and the relation between the License. However, in an attempt to sign up, I am forced to check that "I am a licensed user of the Source engine and/or Source SDK." before I am allowed to make an account. If anyone could clarify weather the Licensing Valve Technology article was relating to the licensed user of Source engine/Source SDK. If not, how do I become a "licensed user of the source engine and/or Source SDK"? Chances are this account will have to be banned/deleted for not having the license, but I really wanted to know how to get one, am I just missing something obvious? Eronth 18:45, 28 Nov 2007 (PST)

Old post but anyways it appears that any owner of HL2 or any of the source games thereafter is allowed to become a licensed owner of the SDK by downloading it and using it.--Woodsyx 06:23, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm looking for a list of avaiable banner templates on this wiki

I've found an entity description which is completly broken, false with a lot of keyvalues and flags missing, I need to add a banner to it. Is there a list of banners available somewhere?--Hurricaaane (Talk) 08:53, 24 Feb 2008 (PST)

When you say banner, do you mean template (such as: {{kv_targetname}} ?) If so then I believe that, at the moment, the only list with keyvalues/inputs/outputs templates is the one on the Help:Editing page. I think there is no comprehensive list of template messages currently available on the wiki. --Etset 14:15, 24 Feb 2008 (PST)
Actually it's banners I'm looking for, not formatting templates. Like This article is a stub, or this page needs to be cleaned up, etc.--Hurricaaane (Talk) 02:37, 26 Feb 2008 (PST)
Here's a few banner templates I know of: {{stub}}, {{pov}}, {{cleanup}}, {{tutorial cleanup}}, translation templates, merge templates, deletion templates. --Etset 03:07, 26 Feb 2008 (PST)
Weird, I thought they were always called notices. Matthew Dryden 09:58, 25 Mar 2008 (PDT)

Hi, is possible to translate the Valve Developer Community's articles in Italian?

Of course! Go ahead and do it. :-) Remember to create the pages at <English name>:it, and use the otherlang templates. --TomEdwards 09:53, 7 Apr 2008 (PDT)

Syntax Highlighting

Hello. Why don't you use some syntax highlighting MW extension? It's better than still using <span style="color: blue;">#include</span> &lt;iostream&gt;. The best is SyntaxHighlight GeSHi.

Website Name

hey, i found this wiki when looking for how to use the level editor in TF2, and find it hard to remember the website name... is there a different URL, instead of http://developer.valvesoftware.com/w/index.php?--Pyromancer 21:55, 17 Jul 2008 (PDT)

You can use developer.valvesoftware.com. It'll forward you to the main page. Solokiller 04:27, 18 Jul 2008 (PDT)
