ok, ive dont this tutorial, are there any that lead on from this, like more advanced rooms (corridors, water pools and the suchlike) - - hirule89

3D view not textured

I have a problem.Whenever i create the box it doesnt appear textured.I can see it in Wireframe mode and Lightmap Grid mode, but when i use "3D Textured" the camera viewport becomes black and i can only see the XYZ axis when i select something.Any ideas on why this happens?I am using an ATI Radeon X700 vid card.Can this be the problem? - madivan

It should appear textured (once you press <Return> inside a 2D window to actually create it). Have you tried updating the drivers to your graphics card? --Andreasen 20:16, 14 Feb 2006 (PST)

Article overhaul

Glad to see someone is taking the time to work on this. This definitely needed some work, and this is a good start. One thing to watch out for -- the article was too thin before, but be careful of making it too much like a reference document instead of a tutorial. There are already plenty of existing reference pages that can be linked. The idea is that someone that has never touched the editor can follow the steps from start to finish and get a compiled (although very basic) level. That's a very worthy goal (building freedom and confidence), which was sorely lacking in the old tutorial. One way is to mix step-by-step instructions in with more tip-based advice and links to other reference pages. That's the basic method I used with the Displacement article. Certain sections have literal numbered steps to complete the task discussed (though I think the article still a bit word-heavy). The Building the Room section in the Creating a Room article could certainly use a numbered list of steps, with a few screenshots to demonstrate what is said in the text. That is one thing that the old tutorial did well. If you need any assistance, do not hesitate to ask. I agree that the Building the Room article is in dire need of pictures. That's why I think I asked editors that in the beginning of the article. I'm busy with restructuring the old pictures and text at the moment, and after the article looks at least better than the old version, I planned on editing the Advanced Lighting tutorial which actually was my original plan, so I felt that somebody else could add new pictures to that article. (Also, the model browser in the Adding Props article will need new pictures later on.) --Andreasen 21:31, 15 Feb 2006 (PST)
That makes sense. I missed that note at the beginning (though it should probably be on the talk page, not in the article text). I would start by adding numbered instructions. That tends to give you an idea of what screenshots might be needed. --JeffLane 22:10, 15 Feb 2006 (PST)

Okay, I'm moving this article to "Your First Map" now, now that the entire series has been made non-deathmatch-specific. If someone knows Counterstrike, they should add to the alternatives in the series - I only know HL2:SP.

Add a section on triggers

I think we should add a section here on triggers. Viewing, basic construction, using entities and all that stuff is great, but incorporating triggers and a basic explanation of how they work would be tremendously helpful for a series like this. Rustyfence 09:15, 12 Aug 2008 (PDT)

Well, they are important, and they arn't explained very well anywhere else. Beginner tutorials walk people through some specifics, but as far as I can tell it is expected that you juwst figure out how they work on your own. Update some pages to be current with more up-to-date SDK tools

While this series of tutorials is generally helpful, it is showing its age. For example, the first page has readers download Source SDK, which has been obsolete for quite some time. I've seen users on some Discord servers following this and they end up confused when I tell them that Source SDK should not be used. This series is still generally applicable today, but it wouldn't hurt to update some of the directions and screenshots to be more current. --Stract (talk) 18:25, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
