Talk:Softimage Mod Tool
Can anyone who is knowledgeable address the "Failed to save sequence before system failure" issue? This alone is practically keeping me from using XSI altogether. I have a lot of .3ds files that I need to import and work on to eventually export for HL2. Just installed XSI last night and they all imported fine. Today they don't and instead produce the above error, completely out of nowhere. Reinstall will fix it, and then bam, next day, same thing. Is there a fix?
- Hmmm, here are a few possible causes that come up to my mind: firewall(Norton, Zonealerm, etc), install path(with space, non-ascii), exporting over read-only file, logitech desktop manager, video card driver...

- Thanks for the reply. I currently have Sygate firewall installed and NOD32 antivirus. I'm using Catalyst 5.10 with a Radeon X800 XL PCI-E. Installed to C:\XSI_4.2_ModTool. No Logitech software installed.
- I installed the program and imported some .3ds files, no issues. The next day I started getting this issue. The only thing I really did between those two times was set up my project in project manager and stuff.
- Isn't this a rather common issue, though?
Okay I just reinstalled, it worked fine, rebooted, didn't work. Didn't change ANYTHING else.
FIXED IT. Turns out I had the ___tmp.xsi file in C:\ hidden, which was causing the problem.
Question, has anyone gotten a working key for this mod tool? I put my email and info, got my key, and the program says, Invalid key... And its been doing this since the last time I tried in december. --Red Comet 20:37, 22 Apr 2006 (PDT)
Source SDK Content Animations
Anyone else notice you cannot open the animation SMD files that are in "sourcesdk_content/" directory properly? I only get the first frame and that's it. I've tried with XSI|Mod Tool 4.2 and Milkshape. I got a friend to use his 3DSMax 8 and it opened the animation SMDs properly. Am I missing something? --Mr.Hankey 13:21, 24 Jun 2007 (PDT)
How do I import source models to xsi?
I just keep on trying, but can't find anything that matches the filetypes Cfive 13:13, 23 Sep 2008 (PDT)
- You need to decompile them first. --TomEdwards 08:37, 24 Sep 2008 (PDT)
- Are there any model decompilers that aren't mdldecompiler or studiocompiler? Cfive 19:22, 25 Sep 2008 (PDT)
- Mdldecompiler is all you need, if your having problems with decompiling, make sure you done this for orangebox models; linky. --Craziestdan 08:37, 26 Sep 2008 (PDT)
- Are there any model decompilers that aren't mdldecompiler or studiocompiler? Cfive 19:22, 25 Sep 2008 (PDT)
Hmm... I've heard that some of the changes mdldecompiler made to studiocompiler made it unstable. That and, more importantly, I can't get it to run. Cfive 13:48, 26 Sep 2008 (PDT)
Addon
The new version should automatically download the Valve 6.02 Addon. -—Shens (talk) 04:55, 14 Aug 2007 (PDT)

New triangle limits
So the XSI mod tool allows for 64000 triangles to be used before hitting the limit now? is this above or below the limit for models used in the Source Engine? Solokiller 12:22, 14 Aug 2007 (PDT)
- Well above any (or most) of the models used in HL2, I believe the old mod tool was a lot more limited --Bluestrike 05:46, 25 Aug 2007 (PDT)
XSI collision model information
- Disable automatic discontinuity in geometry approximation.
- Avoid missing polygons/faces because it can confuse the compiler.

Download Page "Temporarily Down"
The download page for XSI Mod Tool seems to be temporarily down until "early December 2008". It's now half way through December. Have they given up on it completely? Is there a new download page? About how long until the page is brought back up? --Snake oil salesman 16:14, 15 Dec 2008 (PST)
- Softimage are a part of Avid now, so the downtime is probably to re-engineer the site or re-brand the Mod Tool. God knows why either of those should run so far over time though... --TomEdwards 06:29, 16 Dec 2008 (PST)
- Yeah, hopefully it's not going to be to long until the site is brought back up, as its over half way through December (not what I would call "early"). My biggest fear is that Autodesk will discontinue the freeware version, or limit it. Do you think they'd do that? --Snake oil salesman 15:27, 16 Dec 2008 (PST)
- Who cares, just don't download future versions, becuase the current on is fine, atleast if you have it that is. They'll probably sneak some huge limitations inspired from Maya PLE into modtool through an update... --Craziestdan 15:56, 16 Dec 2008 (PST)
- Lucky me. I've just started modding, so of course I decide to get it when Autodesk takes over and decides to "redo" the site (at the least, they're probably going to make me go through a bunch of registration crud). Unfortunately, I can very easily see Autodesk severely limiting Mod Tool. Does anyone know of any other way to get a previous version of Mod Tool? --Snake oil salesman 21:06, 16 Dec 2008 (PST)

- Heh lucky you :D
@Snake oil, I'm sure when the download page is up it will be the same version so i wouldn't worry yet. Just grab it asap when it's up, and don't get future versions till you know the changelog lol. --Craziestdan 21:22, 16 Dec 2008 (PST)
- Whats really getting on my nerves is waiting for "early December" -_-. Somehow, I expected Autodesk to pull something like this... --Snake oil salesman 23:30, 16 Dec 2008 (PST)

Download Link On Article Gives 404
The link (on the article) to the Mod Tool download is broken. Does anyone know a working link? --Snake oil salesman 15:38, 19 Dec 2008 (PST)
- lol did you not see the: Download Page "Temporarily Down"???
- Yeah I'm the guy who made it lol. Anyways, I'm talking about the link on this article. --Snake oil salesman 16:48, 19 Dec 2008 (PST)
A direct link won't do no difference. --Craziestdan 16:40, 19 Dec 2008 (PST)
- I didn't notice there was a direct link put up recently. But still, it won't work I'd imagine/ doesn't. --Craziestdan 17:04, 19 Dec 2008 (PST)
- No suprise; an update is available for XSI lol. I certainly ain't DL'ing that, until someone else does lol. --Craziestdan 20:12, 19 Dec 2008 (PST)
- The mod tool is still available here and here. --brandished 08:14, 20 Dec 2008 (PST)
- Looks like I have to use those links, The site now reports that Mod Tool will be down until "early January 2009". Yup, just like a big company like autodesk to continuously postpone the date -_-. Are these links reliable? --Snake oil salesman 12:28, 22 Dec 2008 (PST)
- What do you mean? They should work, I checked them both links before I posted my comment above. If it's the legitimacy of the files your worried about, the files hashes from the copy of XSI I downloaded from Softimage's site back in March were:

Weight Map breakes on importing smd
Hello. When i'm importing any smd file with bones (like hl2 citizen\rebel), weights on that model breakes. That what do i mean: http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/961/weightbug.jpg
Hi, I have the same problem with my imported models in XSI 6.01. In version 7.5 it worked correctly but valvesource addon is not 100% compatibile so I cannot use it either. XSI just do not work correclty now on both version on Windows 7. Shame... --Pitt1993 08:02, 28 September 2012 (PDT)
Valve is encouraging license violation?
According to the Mod Tool license, "Without limiting the foregoing, You may not use the Software for competitive analysis, or commercial, professional, or other for-profit purposes." Doesn't this mean that using the tool for creating items that will be sold in the TF2 item shop violates the license?
I'm confused by the introduction
"It is recommended to use the latest mod tool version, as various bugs are fixed." "Note: The latest version of the ValveSource plugin doesn't work properly with XSI ModTool 7.5. It should be used with XSI ModTool 6."
Should I use 7.5 or 6?
