This page documents information about an engine not developed by Valve. This information is documented here because it has technical and/or historical relevance to Valve's engines.
id Tech 2, also known as the Quake engine, is an engine created by
id Software for
Quake, and later modified with new features & improvements for
Quake II. It was used as the foundation for
GoldSrc and all subsequent
Valve engines.
id Tech 2 consists of the following two "branches":
- The
Quake Engine, developed for Quake and used by several other games
- The
Quake II Engine (colloquially id Tech 2.5), developed for Quake II and used by several other games
Both version of id Tech 2 engines were later made open-source under the GNU GPL 2.0 (or later) license.
