General discussion

Suggested standard for including a mod- obviously, we should include in-progress mods, but I feel that there should be some sort of media for it to be included. We don't want to wind up saturating the list with mods that it's obvious won't be finished. Just a thought. --Charron 17:15, 30 Jun 2005 (PDT)

There wasn't a category for this so I thought I'd point out that right now this category is its own subcategory. How did that happen? --Deathbagel

Fair listings of mods might be best.

I somewhat agree with Charron. Not every mod will find its way to completion, so it would make sense to keep the list small, in case those mods end up dying off. However, I think every mod should have an equal chance of being listed. If, per chance, the mod does die, then anyone here would be able to modify the mod page to make it not listed in the Categories section anymore. I think this would make the listing process a bit more fair as well as give exposure to those mods who need the exposure. Who knows, some mods may not fail simply because they were listed here. It could just be the extra push they needed to get over that very difficult bump in the road. Just my 2 cents, though. --Lord Neptune 20:38, 30 Jun 2005 (PDT)

I think all Mods should be listed. If you didn't, it would be unfair to those mods not listed. However, I think that someone active in that mod of comunity should post it, not just a random reader. - Mooga I'm so back with this time thing...

Everyone does have a right to be listed, I agree. I simply believe that having some sort of media, be it map screens, model renders, or even concept art shows some dedication to the project and makes it more likely that the mod will progress. But, you're right. If a mod dies, its entry can always be removed. Better to have too many than not enough. I say, leave it to the mod team itself to post their mod here. If they're not about to put their own mod on the wiki (or at least tell someone to), then frankly that's their fault. Not to sound harsh, but promotion is key, and every little bit helps. --Charron 21:10, 30 Jun 2005 (PDT)

I think that media on the wiki could become too much. That's what their website is for. --Mooga 21:25, 30 Jun 2005 (PDT)

I aggree with Charron a gesture of dedication should be there. We don’t need 50 “joe blogs harry potter and the half-life prince mod? (and other never to be started mods) Something more then just a written concept should be needed. Doesn’t have to be amazing, but just something to show someone is actually doing something with it or is going to. Not to say the media should be uploaded to the wiki at all, that would be a disaster.- treb

That wouldn't be a stab at me would it? :P I've kept it only in my personal page, nowhere else on the wiki, and I have media to back it up. -Zevensoft

Not too much should be added. If you used the Wiki as a media page, it's too much. some basic stuff is great and needed but not too much. I feel that if the team has a website, a full team, and some proof of progress then their mod can be listed. But if it's just two guys that are like "Dude,lets make a police mod! We can post on the wiki so people will see it!" then it shouldn't be shown untill they actualy start working on it and have a team (and website). --Mooga 21:36, 30 Jun 2005 (PDT)

P.S. Tred, try the sig command. It's easier then coding your name each time :)

Zevensoft are your referring to my comment? Cause I wasn’t taking a stab at any one. I happen to be working on a two man, no media so far mod myself. Im just being realistic. --Treb 00:30, 1 Jul 2005 (PDT)

OK just the example seemed a bit familiar. I agree about only including completed modifiations, thats why I've only listed those that are complete. -Zevensoft

Familiar? Sorry,:( I made that up on the spot. Once again, I apologize for any misunderstanding. Back on track, It looks like everyone is at agreement on the topic right? --Treb 00:52, 1 Jul 2005 (PDT)

Two points seemed clear, use the Media pages for mods in progress, use the Third Party Mods section for completted works. --wisemx 06:13, 1 Jul 2005 (PDT)

I disagree with anyone who says that non-released mods shouldn't be posted here. I agree that there should be some seperation and distinction for those visiting the site who merely want to download a mod rather than apply to be on a mod team or look and in-progress mods. I propose two seperate pages, one for in-progress mods, and another for released mods. I agree with what Lord Neptune said, "some mods may not fail simply because they were listed here." I'm currently developing my own mod, and have started putting the concept towards development, and so I know that every page you advertise your site at may bring that one extra mod member who finishes the coding, or makes the perfect model, for example. This site is about supporting the source mod community, and I can think of no better way than to allow almost all mods to be displayed. But I do think that a mod should have more than a written concept, they should have something which supports that they are at least somewhat commited to making their mod. --Sparta 12:04, 2 Jul 2005 (PDT)

What about a separate section dedicated to mod recruitment versus in-progress/released modifications? --Merc248 10:40, 12 Jul 2005 (PDT)

Fine by me. I think that should be kept to a single page, organized by position (coder, level designer, etc.) with the list of mods hiring in that particular field. --Charron 11:18, 12 Jul 2005 (PDT)

Rules for being listed as a mod

So we can start a good list here --Mooga 05:42, 1 Jul 2005 (PDT)

Here's my proposed start to the list:

1) Must have a seperate webpage with more details on the modification.

Justification: We don't want to overload the Wiki with tons of information. A simple blurb to grab people's attention should be good enough. Media, images and other content can always find a home somewhere for free. (The Mod Database has plenty of free stuff available to all mods, for instance.)

2) Must at least be started on the developement portion of the modification. More than just a concept.

Justification: Concepts grow on trees, and everyone thinks they know a really cool idea for a mod. If you don't have the ambition to start production, then you're probably not going to be successful. A mod is more than an idea, it is an art... and art requires more than just an idea. --Lord Neptune 06:22, 1 Jul 2005 (PDT)

Not a great idea, only released mods should appear here. --Fluxtah

No, because people ask for support and advice and even acquire a team on this place, I think unreleased mods should stay here too. Kausill 12:26, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

3) Made on an unlicensed version of the SDK -Deathbagel

Format

This should be a good place to mention Chris' Mod Page Template. --pizzahut

It's incredible that so many people are getting interested in Source modification. Thank you Valve for making Source so easy to modify and use. --TheJ89 23:23, 26 Jul 2005 (PDT)

Deletions Notice

I am going through and marking for deletion pages I feel are unnecessary. I feel that this is a developers' wiki first, and as such there should be a limit on what goes on mod pages. I don't mind large mod pages, but multiple is excessive in my opinion and I will be marking them for deletion. This goes for HL1 mods as well, and is not out of malice, but out of a pendantic sense of organization. I may, in the future, go through again and clean up all the pages so they match the template, but for now I'm simply suggesting deletions. --Charron 13:14, 6 Sep 2005 (PDT)

And to think, I started him on this crusade.... Nice going ;) --Pon 01:52, 7 Sep 2005 (PDT)
If you're referring to me, the female pronoun would be a little more fitting. But yes, this is all your fault, so complaints should be directed to Pon. :P --Charron 12:03, 7 Sep 2005 (PDT)
What is this 'female' you refer to? :P --Pon 17:26, 7 Sep 2005 (PDT)
I'd make a joke but it'd be in bad taste. :P --Charron 18:26, 7 Sep 2005 (PDT)

Please update your mod with the appropriate one. Also, could someone with vector graphics skills make a checkmark or similar for a playable mod? --Charron 15:58, 30 Oct 2005 (PST)

The third-party templates now take optional links to a download page. Example usages:

{{AlphaModSmall|engine=Source|download=http:/google.com}}
{{AlphaModSmall|engine=Source|download=}}
{{BetaModSmall|engine=Goldsource|download=http:/google.com}}
{{BetaMod|engine=Source|download=http:/google.com}}
{{ReleasedMod|engine=Source|download=http:/google.com}}

Choose either the regular or "Small" version. The regular goes at the bottom of the page and is prefered if the page has many images. The Small version goes at the top of the page, and will be displayed along the right side. —Maven (talk) 10:43, 31 Oct 2005 (PST)

Released tags added. Maven, double-check the code since I used the Template:AlphaMod from before you fixed whatever you did to it. --Charron 10:53, 31 Oct 2005 (PST)

Note.pngNote:If the download link contains one or more = characters, enclose each in a nowiki tag: <nowiki>=</nowiki>. If you don't, the template will look obviously broken.

Maven (talk) 11:55, 31 Oct 2005 (PST)

How to add....?

Sorry for the noob question, but how do I add (or suggest to add) a mod to the list?

Just create a new page. You can edit the URL above to whatever you want the page to be called, then write the article by clicking the "edit" tab on that page. Preview, save, and you're done! --Charron 15:38, 5 Feb 2006 (PST)

Putting full games in the "HL2 mods" category

Discussion from ts2do's talk page:

Just a quick opinion: I'm not convinced stuff like Sin Episodes belongs in the same Category:HL2 Third Party Mods category as stuff like, say, Dystopia. There's a fundamental difference in that one is a Source engine licensee who has full access to the HL2 source code and one only has the SDK, and so what they are producing is likely to be totally different in scope. As well as that, the HL2 mods list should really stay pure because people might want to browse it for mods they can download for their copy of HL2 or for mods they can volunteer to work for, neither of which is appropriate to something like Sin. Giles 00:28, 6 Apr 2006 (PDT)

It really isn't that difficult to skip over that 1 mod...as well as CZDS—ts2do 06:50, 6 Apr 2006 (PDT)

Since no one person on a Wiki is right or wrong about organisational issues like this, I'm interested in hearing others' opinions on the subject. Giles 09:20, 6 Apr 2006 (PDT)

I say that all mods should go in Category:Goldsource Mods and Category:Source Mods...excluding Steam releases—ts2do 12:22, 11 Jun 2006 (PDT)
I've just finished recategorizing all the mods in the "X Third Party Mods" into "X mods" categories, flagging the older categories for deletion. In this way they can all easily be controlled from the ModStatus template. (If you want to categorize them all mods as "X Smurfs" that should now just require altering that single template.) --MossyBucket (formerly Andreasen) 04:04, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
