Renderización de alto rango dinámico o ARD ("High dynamic range" o "HDR" en inglés) simula brillo por encima de lo cual un monitor de computadora realmente puede representar. A diferencia de bajo rango dinámico o BRD ("low dynamic range" o "LDR" en inglés), ARD "florece" colores por encima de brillo 100% a zonas vecinas y ajustar una apertura virtual para compensar sobreexposición que resulte.
Además de los efectos obvios de esto (véase derecho), ARD da colores más intensos y degradados finos: porque zonas brillantes y oscuros son empujadas a blanco y negro, zonas exponidas correctamente son dibujadas por un rango más amplio de colores.
Source no tiene simulación exacto físicamente de ARD. Su cámara tiene un rango mucho más amplio que el ojo humano (y mucho menos cameras reales), y se adapta más rapidamente a cambios de iluminación. Los dos son expedientes a jugabilidad, por supuesto, especialmente en multijugador.
