The site took its origin from 'FlameHaus.com' and 'SomethingAwful.com', which inspired its idea. Other versions of this website included 'BF2World.com' and 'CS2World.com'. In 2003, an unfinished build of Half-Life 2 was leaked on HL2World by Axel "Anon-G" Gembe. Axel took this data himself in 2002 by illegally accessing Valve's private networks. He later was sentenced to 2 years of probation.
