Empires is a total conversion mod which combines first-person shooter and real-time strategy elements. Set in the future, each of the two teams, the Northern Faction rebel group and the massive Brenodian Empire, has one commander who views the battlefield from above, building structures and directing troops. The other players take up roles through various classes such as scout and engineer.
When the round starts, the commander must build up a base as well as an army. After placing a structure, engineers must repair the building so that it becomes operational. Buildings allow for such abilities as the creation of tanks and researching new technologies. As the game progresses, more units like the heavy tank will become available. Vehicles in Empires have weapons, armor, and engine customization via a unique customization interface. The game ends when one team destroys the opposing team's command tank.
