PAT is a text file format used by the "mkentitypatch" tool to patch [[BSP_(Source)|BSP]] entity lump. The tool does not seem to be shipped with Half-Life 2 itself (however its source code can be found in Source Engine distributions), hinting that perhaps this was a precursor system to [[Lump_file_format|.lmp]] files.
