User talk:Valorborn

I am absolutly confused about how this helpdesk works. I read through everything down to where the pending questions began. I'm not sure where this post will come up, or if it will even display to anyone but myself as it reads "editing user talk: valorborn" at the top of my screen.

I'm looking for advice. I want to create mods and learn how to use the hammer editor very proficiently but there is so much I don't understand. I'm wondering where a good starting point would be. Understand that I know next to nothing, as I'm not even sure how to make a post here. I went to the tutorial section but all of the tutorials I attempted to go through made no sense to me. The commands are something I don't understand. I am 100% willing to try anything or do whatever is necessary to learn. I'm just clueless as to where to start. I did try the 'create a mod' tutorial but it wanted me to open a c++ thing and i don't have one.

Aside from where to start I have another question. Should I learn C++? I bought a C++ book and I downloaded a compiler from

I plan on going through C++ but I'm not sure how necessary it is for modding.

Lastly if this post appears somewhere that is inappropriate for its contents then I apologize and if so can someone delete it or tell me so I can delete it. Any information that I recieve regarding help with the SDK will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • This page is a discussion page about Your page (In that page you can tell a little bit about your self) dvalorborn. You don't need to know how to program in C++ to be able to make new contents for Half life 2 or any other source game. You can use the Hammer editor to make new levels, a grafics editor like Photoshop to make textures or a modeling editor like XSI to make models like shelves or cars. you can get the XSI mod tool free of charge from this website

http://www.softimage.com/products/Mod/v4/

So if you want to make a map for counter-strike for example, you can make models and new walls (textures) for your map without any knowledge of c++. Making a map for Half life 2 or Counter strike source with Hammer is an excellent way to get aquainted with the Source engine.

I hope this helps deadity
