I am thinking of making a Multiplayer server-based RP Mod. Is it possible to use Hl2DM as a base for this, so I can use the Multiplayer-prop-physics? --JeffMOD 13:52, 9 Apr 2008 (PDT)

backgrounds

I am in favor in removing background images from pages. It's pointless and only serves as distraction to reading the text. It's fine on index pages like this Half-Life_SDK as it doesn't interfere with the text there and those serve as kinda a main page for the given game/engine --Nescius (talk) 13:16, 9 May 2025 (PDT)

I recently asked about backgrounds on the SirYodaJedi discussion page. I don't know if it's even worth doing anything about it yet, but I'm fine with both improving the backgrounds (black and white filter and lower opacity, for example) and removing them.

I'd consider a game's software page to be a "main page for the given game", which is why I've been giving them BGs when suitable. I do think the desaturation helps; compare the current version of this page with User:SirYodaJedi/hl2dm bg test, where I switched to greyscale (I also decreased both to 0.0625 opacity instead of 0.125).

Rather than fine tuning some tints for tens of pages it's a lot better to just remove the pointless background. They are pretty much as bad as "software page" template was which was making all software pages look like we are on steam store. It's good to set precedence that backgrounds on game pages are unwanted so other editors don't try to be fancy with them on third-party games too which would need another fine tuning session of tints instead of just deleting it and saying it's unwanted.
Even the test page you linked still interferes with the text
The links in the left sidebar visible all the time are good to stay with background. The rest should not have backgrounds other than exceptions like this Left_4_Dead_2/Docs which can be considered the main page for the documentation --Nescius (talk) 15:54, 9 May 2025 (PDT)
I think I'm more in favor of removing backgrounds from software pages now. The reasons have been given above.
We need to set strict limits for backgrounds so that the wiki doesn't fall victim to some "innovators" again (yep, that's me).
I'll continue to mark unused files as candidates for speedy deletion, and try to sort out useful images such as icons, but won't do anything about backgrounds yet. I don't see a clear solution 😢

I'm indifferent (I like them, but I don't mind if they're gone); the only reason I reverted the changes yesterday were because they were done without a discussion.
