$minilod is a QC command available in all Source games. When the model is built, all LODs that are at higher resolution that the specified one are thrown away and the model is reset to use the specified LOD in their place. This was first used on the XBox 360 to clamp model LODs since the screen resolution was fixed and there was very little memory.
