SmartEdit
Jimmy, a word of advice. If 13,000 people are "as entitled as you are", that does not mean you get your way. It means they get theirs. We are well aware that using SmartEdit names makes life difficult for some people, but you are so few in number that it just isn't sensible to cater to you at the expense of everyone else. A JavaScript solution is the answer to our problem, but with Jeff, who is Valve's man on the site, away, there's no way of creating it.
Until we get that sorted out you can get the information you're after by opening the various FGD files up in a text editor. The FGDs are actually more reliable than this wiki, since a lot of entity pages here still haven't been updated for the Orange Box. --TomEdwards 18:20, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
Re: SmartEdit
I appreciate your advice, Tom. Please allow me to offer you some clarity. I was perfectly content up to last week browsing the site as an anonymous viewer. Once I learned that the articles were changing in a way that diminished my enjoyment of the site, I created this account for the sole purpose of seeing that lost information restored back into the articles. This will take me some time to achieve. You see, although I've been a regular viewer of the wiki here for at least 3 years and am already well aware of the articles accuracy with the Orange Box updates, I've only just discovered the need to participate as an editor. Fishing through the FGDs for literal keyvalues is considerably more difficult than searching the wiki. Seeing how the SmartEdit descriptions are already listed within Hammers entity tool help box, having it repeated here on the wiki just seems a bit redundant to me. I'll look forward to your proposal for a JavaScript solution while I take the time necessary to familiarize myself with the editor interface. Here's to Jeffs speedy and safe return.
With the exception to the missing literal keyvalues, I've admired your changes to the style of the articles and would very much like to see you succeed in your goal of converting the rest of the site. But if you choose to cut me out of the wiki entirely, how then will I be able to cooperate with you? --Gmc.jimmy 19:08, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
- The bottom line is that the purpose of the Valve Developer Community is to document and provide information about using the Source SDK. If you aren't using Hammer, then you aren't using the SDK, so you must defer for the time being to the majority that do. Until the issue with representing both SmartEdit and Keyvalue descriptions is resolved, I suggest that you refer to the HalfLife 2 Knowledge Base. The information on the site predates Episode 1 and the Orange Box, but the entity descriptions are good and contain both SmartEdit and Keyvalue information. SmartEdit text is in bold, with the keyvalue afterwards, why not give it a try?--Fitzroy doll 05:35, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
