:Of course not direct WAV files, you always have to use sentences.txt, but sentences.txt is just a way to help the entity navigate to the actual sentence sound file, located in the sound folder of half-life, which is a WAV file. I didn't want to bring up sentences.txt in the description cuz I didn't want to make it too overdescriptive, I think it's important to mention though that the type of sound file used is the WAV filetype.
