Squad slots are the way squad-based NPCs operate. They allow NPCs to trade roles and take turns. An NPC will typically hold a squad slot for the duration of a Schedule. Despite being a great concept, the squad slots have a huge minus - they are limited. Remember the fact only 2 Combine Soldiers can shoot in a squad? Well, that's not a limitation by the developer, it's the fact there are only 2 squad slots for their range attacks.
