:It's no problem. I didn't mean to single you out. That article just happened to be a good handy example. It's not strictly forbidden by any means, it just that it doesn't really make sense for community articles that other people may be working and changing in the future.  --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 11:12, 6 Jul 2005 (PDT)

Hi there.  I took some screenshots of some basic examples of Logic Gates in Puzzle Maker for use on [[Portal 2 Puzzle Maker/Logic Gates|this page]], however I am unable to upload files as I am not in the 'autoconfirmed' user group.  Are you able to add me to the autoconfirmed user group via [[Special:UserRights]]?  [[User:RJackson|RJackson]] 09:27, 13 May 2012 (PDT)
Jeff, is there a preference for images uploaded? I see a lot of PNG's being used and I use that same format for my cartoons but due to cross-browser problems I normally create images for turorials in JPG, with 15% compression. --[[User:Mark WiseCarver|wisemx]] 10:53, 6 Jul 2005 (PDT)
: That is odd, you should already be a confirmed user. Have you set and authenticated your email address in your user preferences? It's under '''My preferences > User profile > E-mail options'''. --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 10:52, 14 May 2012 (PDT)

::: See "Problem uploading images" below for the requirements for uploading images. --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 18:43, 4 April 2014 (UTC)

:It's up to the community to decide. PNG was a common format for the Hammer documentation because it a) supports transparent images, b) is an open format, c) has good image quality. I don't really see a problem with mixing the formats, as long as they are standard ones, but the community can decide otherwise if they wish. --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 11:12, 6 Jul 2005 (PDT)
== Images uploading ==

::Thanks again Jeff. I created a new image for the CS:S ladder plus a sample vmf with 5 ladders. The ZIP file is on one of my servers, I don't mind if it stays there but you may want to download it and place the file as a local download. [[Ladders - Adding ladder entities to levels.#Counter-Strike: Source Method|Ladders - Adding ladder entities to levels.]]

:::I wasn't able to upload a ZIP file, and I understand the limitations but is there a way I will be able to include sample vmf's? --[[User:Mark WiseCarver|wisemx]] 12:30, 6 Jul 2005 (PDT)
== Puzzle Maker Page ==

::::I'll look into that and see what I can find out. FYI, I added link text to your link to the .zip file. To add descriptive text to an external link use this format: <code><nowiki>[http://www.domain.com/file.ext descriptive text here]</nowiki></code> This works for page links as well as file links. --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 13:58, 6 Jul 2005 (PDT)
Hi, Jeff. I was looking at improving the layout of the [[Portal 2 Puzzle Maker|Puzzle Maker]] page and a thought struck me; right now the page is basically a hub for how-to content, but wouldn't it make more sense if the how-to stuff was moved to the category index to be more consistant with the rest of the wiki?

For example, the [[Valve Hammer Editor|Hammer]] page only describes ''what'' Hammer is, along with a brief history. The actual level design how-to hub is on the [[:Category:Level Design|Level Design category index]] (and the same goes for the [[:Category:Portal 2 Level Design|Portal 2 Level Design category index]].

:::::Again thanks, your change to the file link did improve it.--[[User:Mark WiseCarver|wisemx]] 14:26, 6 Jul 2005 (PDT)
Right now I'm playing with layouts in [[User:Nacimota/Sandbox|my sandbox]]; after discussing it with a few people, I really think it belongs on the category index. Keeping in mind that the 'wiki' link in the actual editor links directly to the [[Portal 2 Puzzle Maker]] page, I wanted to get your position (or even [[User:YasserMalaika|Yasser's]]) before I go moving things around. Cheers. --[[user:Nacimota|<span style="color: #007fbf; font-weight: bold">Nacimota</span>]] [[User talk:Nacimota|Talk]] | [[Special:Contributions/Nacimota|Contributions]] 22:19, 22 May 2012 (PDT)
: Seems reasonable, though consistent with the rest of the wiki is less important than what is effective. You will need to propose a plan for the existing page as it is the entry point and should not be a redirect. --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 13:51, 23 May 2012 (PDT)
:: Yeah, I had no plans on making it a redirect. What I figured we would have is a page describing the Puzzle Maker in a similar fashion to the page that describes Hammer, but perhaps with more detail. I was thinking at the top and bottom we could put something like "for help using the Puzzle Maker, see [[:Category:Portal 2 Puzzle Maker]]", or something to that effect. --[[user:Nacimota|<span style="color: #8BC53F; font-weight: bold">Nacimota</span>]] [[User talk:Nacimota|Talk]] | [[Special:Contributions/Nacimota|Contributions]] 09:20, 24 May 2012 (PDT)

I'm trying to upload an image to accompany a tutorial that I'm writing for creating a working radar mini-map in CS:GO. == Sorting and rendering order ==
==Language Bar==
There seems to be a transparency issue that makes the rendering order opposite of which it should be...ie fading ragdolls are drawn over by a grass floor and bullet impact effects can't be seen in front of a static prop.  I'd also noticed this issue in Goldsource too....are you all ever planning to fix this?&mdash;'''[[User:Ts2do|ts2do]]'''&nbsp;([[User talk:Ts2do|Talk]]&nbsp;|&nbsp;[mailto:tsdodo@gmail.com @]) 00:58, 22 Nov 2005 (PST)

Can you update the language bar with [[Template:lang]] on the page [[Making a Mod]]? --[[User:Mandrew|Mandrew]] ([[User talk:Mandrew|talk]]) 14:09, 24 May 2022 (PDT)

:This is a sorting error. Generally you can avoid more sorting issues if you make your materials alpha-tested instead of alpha-blended (i.e. one level of transparency vs. fully transparent and anti-aliased materials). Sorting issues are common on all 3D engines and hardware because it's actually a hardware limitation, and not something we can simply fix. Future generations of hardware should be faster, allowing us to do more sorting. --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 08:40, 22 Nov 2005 (PST)

Very good...and in-fact...that had been the solution I had been using for this...DX9 videocards do this too? If not...I should just ignore the problem and continue as if it wasn't there (I Guess?)&mdash;'''[[User:Ts2do|ts2do]]'''&nbsp;([[User talk:Ts2do|Talk]]&nbsp;|&nbsp;[mailto:tsdodo@gmail.com @]) 17:10, 1 Dec 2005 (PST)

In my current map, I've got a very deep pit traversed by some glass-textured [[func_detail]] walkways. To try to reduce the rendering load a bit, I had the bright idea of slicing the shaft into sections with [[func_areaportalwindow]] entities, with black [[func_illusionary]] brushes fading into view just outside the range of the fog. If that makes sense. Unfortunately, the engine's had the bright idea of frequently drawing the black brushes ''after'' the glass walkways, even though there are many thousands of of units separating the two. This is the case even when the black brushes are at full opacity - they still seem to get treated as transparent. Unsurprisingly, it looks a bit strange.

Is there any way of giving the engine a clue as to which transparent objects should be drawn first? Or should I just use [[func_areaportal]]s manually switched on and off with suitable triggers, depending on the player's location? Thanks anyway! &mdash;'''<font color="#10c010">Cargo Cult</font>''' ([[User:Cargo Cult|info]], [[User talk:Cargo Cult|talk]]) 06:41, 17 Dec 2005 (PST)

:I just noticed that your question. You may get better sorting by making your func_detail walkways func_brush instead. They are sorted with the world better. However, they are more expensive and do not cast lightmapped shadows like func_detail, so the tradeoff is up to you to evaluate. And using areaportals to hide objects that the player should not be able to see is always a good idea. --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 19:20, 14 Jan 2006 (PST)

== Ragdoll Collisions ==

Hi Jeff; I've got a problem with a singleplayer map I'm scripting. I've got a ferry (func_train) rigged up basically the same as the train in HL2's intro sequence, that I'm having my player fight some combine soldiers on. I've already got a large time investment in the sequence, so I can't scrap it now; I've worked out the AI nodegraph issues, I've got everything working but this.

When the player kills a combine, it's ragdoll falls right through the ferry. I've tried everything I can think of, func_physboxes, and so on, but it seems the ragdolls will only collide with world brushes. Is there anything I can do here? This is a really nasty bug. --[[User:Spektre1|Spektre1]] 13:57, 8 Jan 2006 (PST)

If they're only npc_combine_s entities, you can set the global "super_phys_gun" on, then they'll collide...if you have other enemies that you want to be server ragdolls, you'll need a custom DLL...if you need quick help on making a DLL, I'd be able to make one for you&mdash;'''[[User:Ts2do|ts2do]]'''&nbsp;([[User talk:Ts2do|Talk]]&nbsp;|&nbsp;[mailto:tsdodo@gmail.com @]) 18:42, 8 Jan 2006 (PST)

I came up with a pretty simple solution on my wiki.. http://gmwiki.garry.tv/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin . It's pretty simple. I just added a check box. The user has to check it before registering. Bots won't understand this so on the next page if the box hasn't been checked I just exit. [[User:Garry Newman|Garry]]
: We already have two different checkboxes that aren't Wikimedia standard issue and should be required before you can create an account -- I assumed the spam bot was customized for our site login page. How is it different with your checkboxes? --[[User:JeffLane|JeffLane]] 10:58, 11 Mar 2006 (PST)
:: Oh sorry - I didn't realise that. Are your checkboxes checked on the next page too.. looking at the code they're required to be checked by Javascript.. does it call them on it on the post page too? The bots are probably using curl so they probably won't abide by the javascript. [[User:Garry Newman|Garry]]

Another solution might be to check the post for certain keywords (like an e-mail spamfilter, basically) or if it has more than 50 times http:// in it :) The spam seems to point to the same websites very often. A simple check for "casino" would prolly stop 90% of the spam... --[[User:Vaarscha|Vaarscha]] 09:41, 15 Mar 2006 (PST)

:I don't know which version of MediaWiki is being used here, but I believe there are [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha Captcha]-on-register implementations available for MW 1.3 and 1.4, and a standard plugin being tested from MW 1.5. User permissions - could I be 'autoconfirmed'?

Hi there. I took some screenshots of some basic examples of Logic Gates in Puzzle Maker for use on this page, however I am unable to upload files as I am not in the 'autoconfirmed' user group. Are you able to add me to the autoconfirmed user group via Special:UserRights? RJackson 09:27, 13 May 2012 (PDT)

That is odd, you should already be a confirmed user. Have you set and authenticated your email address in your user preferences? It's under My preferences > User profile > E-mail options. --JeffLane 10:52, 14 May 2012 (PDT)
I have autoconfirm issue too, my email was authenticated at 25 December 2013 at 02:21 and yet i am not in the group and cannot upload. - - -Chocoportals 15:34, 16 March 2014 (PDT)

Images uploading

I have problem with images uploading. I have error: Could not rename file "/tmp/phpO78Nz6" to "public/a/a4/P2PM_glass.png". --Mehiller 11:09, 14 May 2012 (PDT)

Is this a new image? Try it again. In future, please use the Administrators' noticeboard for this kind of issue. --JeffLane 11:30, 14 May 2012 (PDT)

Puzzle Maker Page

Hi, Jeff. I was looking at improving the layout of the Puzzle Maker page and a thought struck me; right now the page is basically a hub for how-to content, but wouldn't it make more sense if the how-to stuff was moved to the category index to be more consistant with the rest of the wiki?

For example, the Hammer page only describes what Hammer is, along with a brief history. The actual level design how-to hub is on the Level Design category index (and the same goes for the Portal 2 Level Design category index.

Right now I'm playing with layouts in my sandbox; after discussing it with a few people, I really think it belongs on the category index. Keeping in mind that the 'wiki' link in the actual editor links directly to the Portal 2 Puzzle Maker page, I wanted to get your position (or even Yasser's) before I go moving things around. Cheers. --Nacimota Talk | Contributions 22:19, 22 May 2012 (PDT)

Seems reasonable, though consistent with the rest of the wiki is less important than what is effective. You will need to propose a plan for the existing page as it is the entry point and should not be a redirect. --JeffLane 13:51, 23 May 2012 (PDT)
Yeah, I had no plans on making it a redirect. What I figured we would have is a page describing the Puzzle Maker in a similar fashion to the page that describes Hammer, but perhaps with more detail. I was thinking at the top and bottom we could put something like "for help using the Puzzle Maker, see Category:Portal 2 Puzzle Maker", or something to that effect. --Nacimota Talk | Contributions 09:20, 24 May 2012 (PDT)

How to become an autoconfirmed user

Hi, I'd like to write an article that require images but I can't upload them because I'm not an autoconfirmed user. What should I do to become one ? I already confirm my email adresse twice so the problem does not come from here ;)

New wave of spam

The latest bout of spam seems different than before, i got this message when i tried to flag a newly created spam page: User account "Renal Disease Diets" is not registered. Please check if you want to create/edit this page. What does this mean, exactly? Should these pages and users be tagged as usual? Solokiller 01:26, 6 September 2012 (PDT)

I think it's just because the spammer's created a User:Page instead of the pages they usually create. —Mattshu 07:31, 6 September 2012 (PDT)
That is correct. It's just a page created in the user namespace. Deleted. --JeffLane 12:45, 6 September 2012 (PDT)

Problem uploading images

I'm trying to upload an image to accompany a tutorial that I'm writing for creating a working radar mini-map in CS:GO. Yet everytime I try to upload the image by clicking "upload file" the page seems to refresh and my file doesn't appear on the list of uploaded wiki images. I am fairly new to uploading images. Am I doing anything wrong? --Nicky Da B 21:01, 29 July 2013 (PDT)

If it is giving an error message after you press the "Upload file" button, post it here. Also, to prevent vandalism and spam, your account needs to be confirmed for 5 days and have made 10 valid edits before images can be uploaded. --JeffLane 12:12, 30 July 2013 (PDT)
It does not throw an error message after I press the "Upload file" button". I am an autoconfirmed user.--Nicky Da B 13:28, 1 August 2013 (PDT)

Thanks for the info on reporting spam, I'm new to this. --Tigerslicer 18:39, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Valve Game remake

Hello. As i understand, you work for Valve Software, right? I would like to start developing a remake of one of Valve's games, but I still don’t know which staff member should I write to ask permission. Ivan Knyazev (talk) 10:05, 28 August 2020 (UTC)
