captioncompiler.exe
Hi, I stumbled upon this page: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=111
And I assume you are the same Tom Edwards?
If so, do you know where I can get the captioncompiler.exe for ep1? I've tried the download link on that page, but I simply get a file called attachment.cgi.
Thanks :)

::Sorry to impose on you again, but did you never experience any similar problems to this during your work on NightFall? I'm completely lost on what could be the cause of this error :/ --Nih 16:54, 6 June 2008 (GMT)

Heh
Hehe, it was you who created that chor scene. I remember that, I even tried to create my own version of it, but I've failed. Because my decompiler didn't like that map as much as other maps. :\ --Sortie 12:38, 5 Feb 2007 (PST)
"Getting Real"
I remember that many months ago, you were soliciting links that you thought would be helpful for mod teams. (I can't remember on which page though, hence why I'm posting here.) At the time, I recommended 37 Signals' "Getting Real" philosophy but bemoaned the fact that they'd put all their content on the subject behind a pay wall.
Yesterday they took the pay wall down, delivering an HTML copy of what had become a PDF e-book. I'd put it up on the appropriate page, but like I say, I can't remember what page that was. As before, I think that while some of the philosophy is specific to web design, much of it is really relevant for mod teams. It emphasises small teams, nimble development with rapid iterative re-releases rather than big versions, doing "less" than your gorilla-sized competitors but doing it with focus and elegance, etc etc.
I'll let you figure out what, if anything, to do with the link, and get back to reading through it. :) --Giles 04:47, 26 Oct 2006 (PDT)
:I believe it was Successful Mod Team Tips?
:I'll be reading that document too: it sounds interesting. Given that, it might be you who's first available to link to the relevant bits. Feel free to kick things off if that happens. --TomEdwards 05:32, 26 Oct 2006 (PDT)
:: If it's 37signals, you also have to learn to ignore pre-existing programming standards and guidelines, and create everything in an amazingly, horrifically insecure and dung-smeared, web2.0 kind of way. But otherwise, the basic gist of it seems sound. ;-) &mdash;<font color="#10c010">Cargo Cult</font> (info, talk) 11:39, 26 Oct 2006 (PDT)
VTF2TGA
You said this program was "inflexible" awhile back. Have you ever gotten this program to respond at all? If so, how did you manage to do that? I can't get any response from it besides it flickering an empty DOS screen at me. --Andreasen 07:00, 16 Nov 2006 (PST)
:Oh, that was me? :-p IIRC it's the VTEX process reversed, but I'm not quite sure and can't test it myself. --TomEdwards 10:37, 16 Nov 2006 (PST)
::Several forum sources (and my own testing) strongly supports my theory that it has died somewhere around the end of 2004, so I've altered the entry. If you can get it to work properly (and it isn't a downloaded older version) tell us how you did it, but by now I'm fairly certain you won't be able to. --Andreasen 10:47, 16 Nov 2006 (PST)

Logaritmic decline and exponential increase
About Template:kv_light: You wrote that the decline is logarithmic for quadratic falloff, but from what I've read, the formula itself is logarithmic. The DECLINE, which should be the inverse, is instead exponential (or quadratic). I'm only 90% certain about this - that's why I'm telling you. --Andreasen 14:10, 17 Aug 2007 (PDT)

CCP maps
Sorry, I'm new to wiki editing and I'm not sure how to link my pages well.
try Creating CCP maps, or the file is at http://piratesofpacifica.com/tf2/ccp_mechanics.vmf
--Hovis 10:27, 20 Jan 2008 (PST)
:I meant a released example that people can play online. --TomEdwards 13:33, 20 Jan 2008 (PST)
::No sorry, we're in the final steps of getting a ccp_ map ready for playtesting, it should be on the Seattle Duck Soup server within a week.  I'll post info here. --Hovis 00:23, 22 Jan 2008 (PST)
Windows Search Problem
:"It will search VMTs if you add them to the index's list of filetypes. The same goes for CPP, H, and all other text files. --TomEdwards 10:06, 25 Jan 2008 (PST)"
::How do I do that (on Windows XP)? As it is now, Windows recognize them as VTFLib files, and Windows still can't find them. Do they need to be associated with Notepad, or what? --Andreasen 07:15, 28 Jan 2008 (PST)
:::Oh, XP? I thought you were on Vista. No idea, but there must be a way somehow. --TomEdwards 10:20, 2 Feb 2008 (PST)
::::Most PC users use Windows XP today, and the transition will take a looong time considering that Microsoft is able to sabotage your computer remotely as a feature on Vista. I'll make a note acordingly. --Andreasen 11:48, 11 Feb 2008 (PST)
Think()
Personally, I'd lose the parenthesis on Think(), and name the article simply Think, to maintain consistency with all other documented functions (just noticed that a Think( variation also appeared...oh well). Also please use the Show preview button more often? It gets really hard to go through the Recent Changes page items if everybody saves a page every couple of minutes. --Etset 15:42, 23 Feb 2008 (PST)
:Personally, I would rather change the other function article titles and redirect to them. The arguments are important.
:And I do use preview. If you look at each change, they're mostly affecting different parts of the page as I spot errors. You can improve recent changes/your watchlist with Preferences > Recent changes and stub display, which sorts these problems nicely. :-) --TomEdwards 00:14, 24 Feb 2008 (PST)
::I also believe that the arguments of a function are important, but surely you would agree that a pair of parenthesis with nothing written in-between lends no additional information to the article, right? Even though it is a function, it doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be named Think(), since the article already makes it clear that it is, indeed, a function. I also think that having an article name such as: "Think( arg1, arg2, ..., argN)" would be disruptive. I still think that Think (joke intended) would be the best title. Just my opinion.
::As an example, check the Wikipedia article for the atoi function, not atoi(). Wikipedia's naming conventions (not rules) state that one should avoid non alpha-numeric characters used only for emphasis, which is the case: the parenthesis serve the purpose of emphasising the fact that Think is a function. But, again, what matters is the name itself (Think ), not what it means, or what it is concretely (that is something the article itself has to explain), unless it is an ambiguous term, in which case the proper article name would be: Think (function). Come to think of it, having Think() as an article name would also pose some minor naming issues with eventual disambiguation needs (Think() (function) would sound strange wouldn't it?). I think article names should really be more simple than that. --Etset 04:17, 24 Feb 2008 (PST)
:::Yikes! --TomEdwards 04:51, 24 Feb 2008 (PST)
:::Having thought a little more, I'm still in favour of (). We don't have to include the arguments between them - it can just be an indication that we're talking about a function, like $ is an indication that we're talking about a VMT command. It would also prevent clashes with articles on non-function subjects with the same name. --TomEdwards 00:36, 25 Feb 2008 (PST)
::::Putting the arguments between parenthesis is (in my opinion) out of the question since that would just complicate the article title. Article name "clashing" isn't really an issue since the normal way to deal with that is with disambiguation pages, which is within common wiki-ing in general. Still, if you feel inclined to keep it with the parenthesis, I would say that we should definitely change the other function articles to include parenthesis as well, to keep things consistent. I'd still like to hear some more opinions though, for example to avoid having to mass-edit everything and then having someone come along and undo it because they didn't like it. Cheers! --Etset 03:16, 25 Feb 2008 (PST)
: I would say that it should be "Think()" or "Think (function)". I agree that inserting additional arguments would be a bad choice. Other than that I don't have a strong opinion. I would err on the side of the person that's doing the work. Problems with disambiguation would seem unlikely if the empty parentheses were present, so that seems a non-issue. Elsewhere in text it is referred and linked as simply "Think" and "Think function", so redirects will probably be used often regardless. Nice work on the Entity tutorial updates, by the way Tom. --JeffLane 18:15, 26 Feb 2008 (PST)
Updating image files
While I'm here, I'll take the chance and ask: how do you "update" an image file? I've tried uploading a (fixed) picture with the same name as the already existing ("broken") picture, but it says a picture with that name already exists. Cheers! :) --Etset 15:42, 23 Feb 2008 (PST)
:On the error page you should see an option to continue anyway, or words to that effect. --TomEdwards 00:14, 24 Feb 2008 (PST)
::Thanks, you're right! It might sound strange, but when I tried to do this before I think the "warning page" that appeared was different ... Still, it's working now :) Cheers! --Etset 04:17, 24 Feb 2008 (PST)
Introduction
I'm a new member here, fluent in wiki and good storytelling, okay with maps, basic knowledge of C++ and nothing more. I intend to become quite an active member of the VDC and, since you seem to be quite active too, I thought I should introduce myself. I'm Jazmeister, and thankyou for holding my hand as I made my first entities! Here's hoping my learning curve is steep enough to where I can contribute all I hope to.
