Controlling a Squad
The maximum amount of NPCs a player can have in a Squad is 4. However that does not include other NPCs, such as important game-ending allies (e.g. Alyx), so you can control 4 Squadmates and player important allies at the same time.
Also, note the small bar to the lower left of the screen. This bar represents how many members are left in your Squad, and if any are medics. Medics will have a cross symbol above their icon.
