:It's up to the community to decide. PNG was a common format for the Hammer documentation because it a) supports transparent images, b) is an open format, c) has good image quality. Generally you can avoid more sorting issues if you make your materials alpha-tested instead of alpha-blended (i.e. one level of transparency vs. fully transparent and anti-aliased materials). Sorting issues are common on all 3D engines and hardware because it's actually a hardware limitation, and not something we can simply fix. In my current map, I've got a very deep pit traversed by some glass-textured [[func_detail]] walkways. To try to reduce the rendering load a bit, I had the bright idea of slicing the shaft into sections with [[func_areaportalwindow]] entities, with black [[func_illusionary]] brushes fading into view just outside the range of the fog. If that makes sense. Unfortunately, the engine's had the bright idea of frequently drawing the black brushes ''after'' the glass walkways, even though there are many thousands of of units separating the two. This is the case even when the black brushes are at full opacity - they still seem to get treated as transparent. Unsurprisingly, it looks a bit strange.
 
Is there any way of giving the engine a clue as to which transparent objects should be drawn first? :I just noticed that your question. You may get better sorting by making your func_detail walkways func_brush instead. They are sorted with the world better. However, they are more expensive and do not cast lightmapped shadows like func_detail, so the tradeoff is up to you to evaluate. Hi Jeff; I've got a problem with a singleplayer map I'm scripting. I've got a ferry (func_train) rigged up basically the same as the train in HL2's intro sequence, that I'm having my player fight some combine soldiers on. I've already got a large time investment in the sequence, so I can't scrap it now; I've worked out the AI nodegraph issues, I've got everything working but this.
 
When the player kills a combine, it's ragdoll falls right through the ferry. I've tried everything I can think of, func_physboxes, and so on, but it seems the ragdolls will only collide with world brushes. Is there anything I can do here? Isn't there some way to set up registration so it requires human authorization?  This is how some/most of the Valve online forums (Steam and DOD at least) work.  The number of people who actually register to post here has to be pretty small compared to the forums.  This doesn't of course stop spammers outright, but what it does do is slow them down.  They won't be as likely to come back to spam if it takes a day for authorization for example.  Also, email addresses are optional.  Make it required and again you put a bit more of a burden onto someone.

I came up with a pretty simple solution on my wiki.. http://gmwiki.garry.tv/index.php?title=Special:Userlogin . It's pretty simple. I just added a check box. About 10 minutes into overhauling the [[Valve_Developer_Community:Community_Portal|Community Portal]], it occurred to me that I had meant to consult with you and ask your permission before starting (what with it being one of the main pages, linked in the sidebar and all that). Sorry for not doing so.
 
Some of my motives and goals:
* The Community Portal had struck me as a bit of a lame duck page for a while. It seemed a little bizarre to say "Welcome to the VDC" and follow it immediately with "Would you like to go somewhere else now?". The huge list of links seemed overwhelming and difficult to parse. I wanted to break them apart to make them more accessible and more easily browsable (making use of the power of categories).
* The VDC has broadened a little beyond just documenting the technical details of the Source Engine. Many of these new pages, though, were effectively orphaned in that the link trail to them from the front page was extremely long and complex. I wanted to make some of these pages more visible.
* I wanted to shorten the page length so it would require much less scrolling.
 
Hopefully you agree with me that the changes are an improvement. If not, please let me know and I'll happily revert them, or work to integrate the best of both.
 
There's certainly still some bruising to heal after the surgery:
* In a sense, I've replaced a huge list of links with a huge list of links. Some of the text will need tweaking to help its readability. It's also not as pretty as the old version was, so perhaps a table-ninja can spruce it up.
* I'm sure there are many more VDC pages that would be a welcome addition to the [[Valve_Developer_Community:Community_Portal#Here on the VDC|Here on the VDC]] section. Hopefully others will fill in the gaps I've left.
* The [[:Category:External Sites|External Sites]] category and its pages, which form the foundation of the [[Valve_Developer_Community:Community_Portal#Elsewhere|Elsewhere]] section, are still pretty messy and difficult to read. I'm also a little wary of doing too much to them, since there's a risk of editorialising when choosing which site belongs where.

Hey whats up Jeff sorry about the Advanced HDR page im still working on that but i really intended its design to show and explain HDR plus give information about it and the various techniques that can be used with it. Basic HDR doesnt really explian too much and i think that HDR should get a better page explaining all these things. :Don't worry, there is nothing to be sorry about, wiki editing takes some getting used to. In general, you should not create links to unfinished articles on the main category pages. Other users will go there looking the for information, but find that it isn't available (which is bad). It is better to wait until some useful content is posted before linking to the article.
:On a separate note, you should sign your comments with your actual user name ([[User:MrTwoVideoCards|MrTwoVideoCards]]) instead of "Gear". You can use <code><nowiki>--~~~~</nowiki></code> to automatically sign your posts with the correct signature and timestamp. yes thats hat happened but the strange thing is i didnt change those settings for my profile at all. when i put:<nowiki>--~~~~</nowiki> it automaticly signs as Gear however i changed it so it should be MrTwoVideoCards now--[[User:MrTwoVideoCards|Gear]] 13:44, 4 Oct 2006 (PDT)

i was wondering how you obtained that effect in EP2 during the strider fight at the end of the game. He shoots at a container with his cannon and the container bends and has a dent in it. The player is inside the container when it happens so i was wondering ow do to that.
