VDC as vanity page
I've noticed User:Kostya is turning this wiki into his own vanity website, uploading an absurd number of images (see also Alyx versus Freeman). Is this forbidden? I can't really find any rules about anything anywhere, except references to Wikipedia rules, where such behavior would be strictly forbidden. EDIT:In the meantime, I've been writing up Help and guideline articles, so that we actually have help and guideline articles, but I've avoided this specific subject for the time being because I'm not sure about it and you're the closest thing to official input that's available. Thelonesoldier 22:05, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
: In general, we give people some latitude with their own userspace. However, the site is not a blog host or a file repository and should not be used for that. There are simply better sites for those use cases. --JeffLane 01:03, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
Delete a duplicate image?
Hi, I uploaded an image here :File:NVidia_EnableAO.PNG, but apparently two copies were uploaded (I really don't know how that happened, I only clicked upload once). On the wiki two copies are only different in that one of the has the PNG capitalized and the other doesn't. Could you delete one of them? Thanks. Thelonesoldier 23:35, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
: There was something seriously messed up with that file. I deleted the existing version, so you'll have to re-upload it and see if that works. Try using a lowercase extension, that is preferable. --JeffLane 01:11, 2 October 2010 (UTC)
::Thanks, I didn't use uppercase the first time but the duplicate ended up with it.
::Would it be possible to appoint someone with partial administrative powers to start pruning things on the massive list of problem content, some of which have been waiting to be deleted for years? Thelonesoldier 11:34, 11 October 2010 (UTC)
:Also, you should probably delete this: :File:Bxd.jpg Thelonesoldier 19:56, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Could you look at User:Tanisha? Clearly a spam only account ( ). Thelonesoldier 20:31, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Personal attacks
I'm sorry to bother you again, I imagine I'm annoying, but I think Gear/MrTwoVideoCards' behavior has gotten out of hand and inappropriate here: . :lol. Clearly not the best. But gently and calmly explaining to you why the article doesn't meet proper criteria wasn't enough. Even though I made over 3 points as to why this was the case. Your inability to understand that was the result of how that talk page grew to it's size. Rightly so it has nothing to do with how I behaved, but afterall you seemed to be "thinking with hurr". You still are.
:Anyways yess, in case this does become a problem for you and I didn't even wish to include you (was going to talk to Tom Edwards instead - way to go Lonesolder) I put up a delete tag for a Ambient occlusion article about two weeks ago. Sometime at least at the end of November. My first reasoning to having done this was: "Sorry but unless this is an actual shader you can use, or if this article would to present some way or form of shader authoring to achieve this effect it's worthless. Anyone can read about SSAO anywhere else, and this even includes wikipedia". I Understood I wasn't entirely clear, but as required later I went on to reply and post up a few points as to why this isn't something we should have up on the wiki. This article was like the equivalent of talking about AA, or some other form of rendering thats almost in any engine. It's nothing really source specific, and something mappers do not have to care/concern about. While it's cool and fancy and all, thats not a reason why an article should stay on the VDC. Anyways obviously as seen in the talk page my points weren't getting through to them, and they insisted on arguing that nothing was wrong on the page. I eventually went on to ask the original author to either re-write the page to be useful, or provide perhaps some information on how to author a Ambient Occlusion shader. I went through all the main steps of making points, asking for a clean up/re-write etc before I completely lost hope in Humanity and no longer wanted to live on this Planet. But I don't apologize for my behavior. If lonesolder wants to go and play daddy's girl to you then so be it. But I calmly went through the needed steps before going south.--Gear 03:10, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
:: See Talk:Ambient occlusion. There is no reason for this level of personal attacks, no matter what steps were taken to get there. --JeffLane 02:16, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
:We have similar behavior continued from 1/4 Life, who also is trying to revert me out of editing the page at all. ::I'm going to go ahead and say you need to get banned. All of your edits are terrible, and you take any form of change upon your work as a personal attack.--1/4 Life 23:16, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

:This might be important for future reference, is there any policy regarding community votes, i.e. whether we should count votes from people with little or no editing history? On Wikipedia such votes are referred to as sockpuppets and discounted, but this isn't Wikipedia so I'm not sure. Thelonesoldier 06:29, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

:::Your definition of insulting is pretty extreme IMO, and while he could've made his argument a little better, it's not an insult. Also, why are you fishing for ways to get him banned? Are you checking every edit he makes just to see if he uses the wrong word? Solokiller 12:51, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
::::Quiet yourself Solokiller. Clearly Thelonesoldier is the greatest contributor this wiki has. What right have you, a mere one edit a week mortal to question his infinite knowledge?--1/4 Life 03:18, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
::::He already got banned, permanently. He made a new account. I really have no interest in debating about any of it. It was just a heads up for Jeff, he can do whatever he wants. Thelonesoldier 13:01, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

User preferences box not stylized

It may only be happening for me, but my user preferences blinded me with its original white background. I wasn't sure if this was purposely set or accidental by not using the same color schemes as this new layout. —Mattshu 18:44, 27 June 2011 (PDT)

That was an oversight -- the changes did not get applied. Should look better now, though it is a work-in-progress. --JeffLane 19:51, 27 June 2011 (PDT)
That's a lot better. Thanks. —Mattshu 20:27, 27 June 2011 (PDT)
Also, I'm not sure if this was meant to remain, but when browsing a picture, the table class 'wikitable filehistory' and the table id 'mw_metadata' isn't stylized with the new layout either. —Mattshu 05:55, 9 July 2011 (PDT)
Yes, there's a few more areas, especially with tables, that are usable now, but need updating to fit in properly. They'll be fixed at some point. --JeffLane 13:57, 11 July 2011 (PDT)
Alrighty, just bringing them to attention —Mattshu 14:36, 11 July 2011 (PDT)

Old VDC theme

Could you add the original style as alternative to the preferences? I quite liked the original bright theme. --pizzahut 04:26, 28 June 2011 (PDT)

Unfortunately, no. It was tested, but too many changes to site templates were required that made the old theme unusable. --JeffLane 11:07, 28 June 2011 (PDT)

Floating image borders

Really liking the new style! There is one niggle though: all floated boxes have borders, which isn't always desirable. Could the borders be disabled on images? --TomEdwards 05:10, 28 June 2011 (PDT)

Yes, the border should not be there. This was fixed. --JeffLane 11:09, 28 June 2011 (PDT)

Otherlang2 template integration

Tom here. Since there's an actual site style now, could I please put in a request? --Artfunkel 13:45, 30 June 2011 (PDT)

What exact changes are you requesting? It's not clear the scope of what you're asking for from that page. --JeffLane 14:45, 1 July 2011 (PDT)
It's some new HTML to replace the current firstHeading element, embedding the otherlang bar into the site properly. It would need to be added to the custom theme PHP. --Artfunkel 15:21, 1 July 2011 (PDT)
If you would like to submit a functioning patch against the Mediawiki 1.16.5 Vector codebase, we can look into testing it. --JeffLane 13:52, 5 July 2011 (PDT)

Looks great

New site style looks great! Thelonesoldier 21:53, 30 June 2011 (PDT)
