Quake III Arena is a multiplayer FPS released in 1999. The third installment of the Quake series, Quake III differs from previous games of the series by excluding a story-based single-player mode and focusing primarily on multiplayer gameplay.

Source ports
- ioq3 - An active source port with several security fixes which supports arbitrary resolutions and has an optional new renderer with enhanced effects. Does not support connecting to legacy servers using the deprecated Punkbuster anti-cheat.
Notes
Players can change nicknames to have colored nicknames and colored chat messages. This also affects gameplay as they can be easier to spot and focus fire in games other than 1v1. ^1 — Red ^2 — Green ^3 — Yellow ^4 — Blue ^5 — Light Blue ^6 — Magenta ^7 — White. The OSP had extra command ^B or ^b — this makes your text blink ^F — only makes the text visible the 1st half of a second ^f — only makes the text visible the 2nd half of a second.[1]

- The former Infinity Ward employees, including Jason West and Vince Zampella, prior to founding Respawn Entertainment, developed several
Call of Duty games using a
heavily modified version of
id Tech 3. In 2010, after both West and Zampella were fired by Activision and several employees from Infinity Ward also left the company, they founded Respawn Entertainment and started developing
Titanfall, which they decided to chose the
Source engine (specifically, modified version of
Portal 2 engine branch) because they have been familiar with the IW engine, which is a heavily modified version of
id Tech 3 engine, aswell because of
Portal 2 runs at 60FPS constantly on both
Xbox 360 and
PlayStation 3. The modified engine branch was later known as "
Titanfall engine branch". The
Source engine itself also have the similar code and structure, but is much older and predates id Tech 3 (which used few GoldSrc, id Tech 2 code).

How can I change my name color?
When typing your name into the console, enter a caret: ^ (by holding down the SHIFT key, and pressing number 6 on the top row) and then a number between 1 and 7. The caret will disappear, and now all the text you type will be in a different colour. You can switch colors as often as you like. When you press return, the name is saved into your Quake 3 config so u only have to type it once.
The color codes are as follows
^1 = Red
^2 = Green
^3 = Yellow
^4 = Blue
^5 = Light Blue
^6 = Magenta
^7 = WhiteThe same color codes can also be used to color chat text
How can I make my text blink or fade?
These are features of OSP. OSP knows an additional number of ^ controls next to the standard colors. Here's a list of the OSP controls:
^B or ^b = this makes your text blink
^F = only makes the text visible the 1st half of a second
^f = only makes the text visible the 2nd half of a second
^X[rrggbb] = Gives the text a colored shadow. Replace [rrggbb] with the hex value of the desired color. Example: ^XFF0000 is red and ^X777777 is some kind of grey.
^N = This resets all the ^ controls, making the text behind it look like normal again
