Awards

For your tireless work on Otherlang which I'm pretty sure exceeds 500 edits, I award you... the Koala award!

Koala Award!
The Koala! Isn't he cute?

This newly and arbitrarily created award features a cuddly marsupial, uploaded for no discernable reason by a Valve employee! This makes it almost like an official award, except not at all really! Thanks for your hard work, and remember:
The animals of Australia are always watching!

Hah, Thank you :P—Mattshu (Talk) 14:46, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

General Discussion

A general tip for taking pictures is that a white background works much better than a black one, because it blends in with the rest of the page. (I believe there's a texture simply called "light" or "white" that I used when I took the physical entity pictures you see in the wiki, that's even self-illuminating in-game.) --MossyBucket (formerly Andreasen) 03:38, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Actually, I was planning on using a white background, however you couldn't really see "ground node" appear on the actual entity. It personally bothered me so I just went with a black background, knowing it wouldn't really blend well with the page :P --Mattshu 03:47, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
After taking another picture of it with a white background, I realized it must have just been my old monitor that hindered its looks. I updated the picture with a white background, looks a little better. --Mattshu 19:07, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Improvement drive?

With the release of Portal 2 less than two months away, I suspect we're headed for a surge in wiki use in a few months. I think Msleeper already expressed his desire to launch a Portal 2 mapping article collaboration sometime soon. I was thinking, before we get that surge of new users, it might be good to try and launch an "improvement drive" and attempt to get active users to put a lot of effort into a wiki-wide cleanup.

My idea is that a few of us draft up a project page which highlights some major goals for the project, such as taking care of articles in the stub/cleanup/merge categories. Another big problem is the high number of orphan articles which are only categorized and will vary rarely be clicked on. I think we could use some "list" articles (a good example list would be a page listing all the third party tools sorted into groups, with a brief summary of each tool. This would be infinitely more useful than Category:Third Party Tools). Maybe we could even get the admins to delete some of the articles in the deletion backlog!

One we finished the draft, we could create an official page for it, perhaps get an admin to put it at the top of the main page. Everyone would be free to contribute ideas to the improvement drive and hopefully everyone would be willing to put some hard work in.

Thoughts? Would you be interested in this? Thelonesoldier 08:28, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

I like the idea, but something like a mass VDC cleanup would require more than a handful of people, and having an active administrator wouldn't hurt either to really justify the speedy in speedy deletion. I'll do what I can to help out, but my dedication to the wiki can only go so far when it comes as a job, I have other things going on at the moment. But like I said, I'll do what I can to help out. --Mattshu 17:47, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Mod deletion

The way the Help:Mod Profiles reads as we wrote it, it's clear you aren't supposed to add articles with no proof of concept in the first place. I think we were using the "hasn't been updated in over a year" standard for articles that were created before we wrote the policy. I think there's a term for that in law but I can't recall it at the moment. Anyway for already existing articles I think it was important to give them some leeway since they were made before the policy is in place; however I feel we should be much stricter on new articles.

We sort of started a discussion on this at Help talk:Mod Profiles but it didn't go very far. Maybe we should get it started up again. If you want to throw your opinion in please do. Thelonesoldier 10:36, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

I was more aiming towards reverting only because the deletemod template was added four hours after the page was created. Seemed a bit hasty to me, but you have a point. I never really read the standards in detail, I just followed the "not updated in over a year/no proof of concept" condition :P I'll take a looksy at the discussion after I get my 8 hours of slumber —Mattshu (Talk) 12:37, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Machine translation

Please don't do it again XD. Just add Cleanup template if you see something wrong. --Mehiller 13:57, 30 August 2011 (PDT)

Machine? What page did ya mean? —Mattshu 14:10, 30 August 2011 (PDT)
Oh, the Template:First room menu:ru edit? Sorry, sometimes I forget there's an active Russian contributor :P —Mattshu 14:13, 30 August 2011 (PDT)

Alvin

He just deleted our comments... I'm not sure what's your opinion about it, and what to do about it.
I also looked at this and noticed that he didn't contribute anything, he didn't write any new tutorial on his talk page...

Can we do anything about it? --Mr. P. Kiwi (Talk | Contributions) 07:51, 1 September 2011 (PDT)

Unless JeffLane see's it as malicious, I'm not sure we can do anything else besides ask him to stop. The user page, unless containing illegal/pornographic/etc material, is the user's personal space and it's frowned upon to change their space. Either Alvin is doing this on purpose, or he's just using his talk page as his personal webspace? —Mattshu 08:44, 1 September 2011 (PDT)

Deletion of Broken redirect pages?

Shall I mark any pages that are broken redirects as candidates for speedy deletion, using {{delete|Broken redirect}}? [Pro-X]LikeLakers2 (talk | My Wikipedia userpage (talk)) 12:58, 5 November 2011 (PDT)

Sure, if you'd like. It seems most of the pages that were once being redirected to were all removed anyway. —Mattshu 22:48, 5 November 2011 (PDT)
Welcome to the VDC, by the way. You seem to be an avid Wiki editor yourself —Mattshu 22:55, 5 November 2011 (PDT)
Thanks! I just happen to know a lot about WikiSyntax is all. If you want to learn more about MediaWiki, which is the software that this wiki runs on, visit mediawiki.org (or if you are too lazy to click the extlink (or type it in), click here). Again, thanks. :) [Pro-X]LikeLakers2 (talk | My Wikipedia userpage (talk)) 05:34, 6 November 2011 (PST)

{{wrongtitle}}

Should I (or we, if you want) perhaps go through the transclusion list for wrongtitle and subst: it? The way my recent edit does it, it allows for optional substitution no matter if the title param is specified or not. So again, shall I/we go through and subst: it on each page that it is used on? [Pro-X]LikeLakers2 (talk | My Wikipedia userpage (talk)) 14:51, 21 November 2011 (PST)

My intention is to remove the template from the VDC all together. I plan on replacing each {{wrongtitle|title=title}} instance with the MediaWiki's {{DISPLAYTITLE:title}} snippet. —Mattshu 22:35, 21 November 2011 (PST)
