xsi sucks

get blender :)

That wasn't nice at all, especially considering SoftImage XSI is a marvelous application. --wisemx 13:58, 21 Dec 2005 (PST)
I don't want 3d application flame war in this wiki. Rather than claiming "We are better, they suck"(how infomative!) I want to see objective guides from each application to SMD. Then we can tackle still unknown .qc issues(making gestures, for example) together. By the way, XSI is really good once you learn its way. -n-neko 17:34, 21 Dec 2005 (PST)
Well said Neko san. --wisemx 04:13, 22 Dec 2005 (PST)

Would be nice to expand on this initial tutorial to include how to actually do some of the translations, like pressing X for scaling, pressing C for Rotation and V for movement. Zunni 13:40, 2 Oct 2006 (PDT)

Rewrite

I think it's time for this page to get a rewrite. There is a lot of good information on this page, and none of that is going anywhere, but considering how many people use XSI Mod Tool for Source modding, and how many of those people are encountering the subject of modeling for the first time, I think it's important to provide a good, solid tutorial. This first pass is just to outline the structure; none of the information has actually been touched. It's very much a WIP, so don't revert it out of hand. I'm going to be updating it shortly (hopefully tomorrow), I just ran out of time today. Yithian 16:01, 10 May 2008 (PDT)

I cut the following section from the tutorial as it appears to be archaic:

Some notes on selections

You can't save your select mode preference in XSI Mod Tool. Every time XSI Mod Tool is started it resets “Select Single Object in Region? and “Extended Component Selection? to enabled. The latter will keep things selected until you manually de-select them using middle mouse button click or Ctrl+Shift+A which also disables right click context menus.

I recommend you to uncheck "Extended Component Selection" every time you run the application unless you were familiar with Softimage|3D.

Note:In the latest download this can be found in File > Preferences. It comes under the "Select" category and is named "extcomponetsel"

I've preserved it here in case someone finds it useful. Yithian 07:44, 16 May 2008 (PDT)

where is?..

The Main Command Panel?

One thing that I have noticed: when you scale or rotate an object in XSI, then go to export it into the SMD file, compile it, and use it in your game...the model's shape looks incorrect. To avoid this, make sure and use the freeze all transforms command under the transform section of the Main command Panel (MCP). This resets the surface normals to their correct values. Now that we have a cube, you can use what we learned above to get it looking good in our views, so that we can actually see what we are doing.

How to save a file

I feel like this is the only thing the tutorial kinda left out. And I know it seems simple, but I keep getting errors that don't make sense every time I try to save and I have no idea what I'm doing, so apparently it's not. Greenhourglass (talk) 03:13, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
