Language Filters on Wiki
Is it possible to implement a language filter on wiki? I don't mean for swearing, I mean to block out articles that aren't in your normal language from being displayed in the recent changes and random pages. - RodeoClown 00:39, 20 Mar 2006 (PST)
- I would have to say no, because the alternate language articles are in the main namespace. If we had a system set up like Wikipedia then they wouldn't even show up. The Valve staff hasn't even upgraded the wiki software since they installed it (apparently due to their customizations, but making diffs from the base code to the current version and then reimplementing them when they're done shouldn't be as hard..) Anyway, from a logical standpoint, I'd say they're probably not going to. But that's just me. They don't happen that much, either.. --AndrewNeo 13:40, 10 Apr 2006 (PDT)
- Actually, the wiki software has been updated for security and bugfixes. An upgrade to a newer version of the software is forthcoming. Full version upgrades are not trivial, as Mediawiki often makes changes that break existing features, even if you have not made any customizations. I tend to agree that there should be something done about the language issue. One, it's pointless to have an example of something written in another language when you are looking for English. Two, it's annoying to do a search and have something come up not in english. Three, it would be easier for people of another language to find it, if it was in another section. Four, Since this is a mostly English forum, it makes it difficult to maintain the accuracy of posts made in another language. Since we have so many of the boxes I made to put at the top of games now (ex. Shadowgrounds has four) we should move to the same type of system Wikipedia uses, the sidebar (see Wikipedia:Half-Life 2 for example.) This way we could fit the name, a screenshot, release dates, mod status, and Steam URLs all in one place without six or so different templates. No specifics like Wikipedia (like system requirements and ESRB rating), we need to keep this a developer community and just link to Wikipedia for information like that. Separate Wiki for Valve "Game" Community?
There are many articles about "playing" Valve/Steam games(title informations, bug feedbacks, character explanations, etc) lately. How about having a separate wiki for players? It would help many non-developers out there, while keeping VDC focused on development topics. --n-neko 23:21, 7 Jun 2006 (PDT)
- I'm not convinced that the "playing" pages are actually hurting the VDC's focus on development topics. All the development articles are still there and accessible from all the same links and searches. Does Valve get involved?
Not trying to be overly critical, but after looking through this wiki I wonder how much valve really cares about us, who are interested in working with the source engine. There seems to be no participation or commitment from valve whatsoever. Am I wrong? Not that we can't deal with things ourselfes, but I wonder if content wouldn't improve/increase if valve was more eager to help (read: browse around now and then and answer questions on topics that may be complex/difficult to understand), which in turn should make people more interested in the source engine.

- Probably, Valve developers should have created something like a developers' blog. Blog is not meant here as a cool feature of the time, but as a definetely comfortable way of communication with the Valve team via comments and\or users' articles. Kith 02:55, 25 Jul 2006

- This is one of the reasons I'm a bit turned off Source at the moment. I'm beta testing a game and engine by an indie dev (along with mod tools), and after having alot of contact with him over ICQ, helping out with documentation and him concisely answering any questions I've got... coming back to modding with Source seems tedious. - I painfully have to agree that while Valve is normally very community-oriented, they don't show much participation in this wiki. At least, not that we know of. On the other hand, you could say that Valve counts on the community to do half their work. No one would get HL2 if it didn't have any mods, CS and DOD were made by the community, and similarly, they count on the community to make the SDK documentation. When they're so busy working on additions to Half-Life 2, I suppose it's the only good way to do things.--Katana 13:52, 26 Aug 2006 (PDT)

Running or compiling map error
The instruction at "0x0fc43e2c" referenced memory at "0x0d70a1a0". The memory could not be "read".
This is the error message that appears after:
- the map has compiled with no errors, it runs css and starts to lead, then the game freezes, instantly exiting it and placing it in a small black window in the top left handside of screen, then this message appears and when i press ok it goes back to hammer. Thing is before i went to sleep it worked and now it doesnt ? Anyone had any similar issues

i made a cool map for Garry's Mod and i want to add an AutoTeleporter of a spesific name. (my english is bad so dont say anything about my language) i want to ask you all if there is a thing that automatically telepot players with a name like "google" and "ass" or "killer"?

For MOD Developer Seekers
Right below "For Mod Teams" could we create a section "Looking for a MOD Team" for the individuals seeking a home? A few articles could be made on finding and evaluation teams, what to do when applying and provide mod teams a place to advertise for help. Something like:
- Finding and evaluating MOD teams. Join Once, Join Right!
- Help-Wanted: MOD teams currently looking for members.
Help-Wanted would be nice since MOD teams don't really have an official way of advertising for help. Plus we could break it up by where a team is in development for those only wanting to join MODs that have been around, or those that are just starting. Giving us a basic way to evaluate teams.
- There is a Category: Help Wanted and Category: Help Available, linked from the Community Portal, where people can advertise for team members/teams. Guess some articles might be a good idea too. Feel free to start them and then see who adds to them. --Giles 04:21, 24 Dec 2006 (PST)
