The Valve Developer Community site has gone through an upgrade to the underlying software. This upgrade adds a number of new features and bug fixes to the site. In addition, the upgrade will make it easier to add new features to the site in the future.

Note for all editors: For added protection against vandalism, a confirmed e-mail address is now required for all users that wish to edit pages on the site. You can confirm your e-mail address (using the address you entered when registering) by clicking this link: Special:ConfirmEmail.

If you're not sure your e-mail address is current, you can check your Preferences page.

Contents

June 18th 2009 update

  • Page revision history now has controls to display history by date.
  • A "Visual Diff" mode has been added to history pages and is selected by using the Visual comparision button.
  • Thumbnails are now shown in the file history (images) lists.
  • Added "link" parameter to image links, to allow images to link to an arbitrary title or URL (or to not link at all when the parameter is blank).
  • Added Special:WantedFiles, allowing users to find image links with no uploaded image.
  • Added Special:WantedTemplates, special page to display missing templates linked from articles.
  • Moved password reset form from Special:Preferences to Special:ResetPass.
  • Time zones can now be specified by geographical location in user preferences, avoiding the need to manually update for DST.
  • The user list can be optionally sorted alphabetically or according to account creation time.
  • When moving (renaming) pages with Special:Movepage, it now shows a list of sub-pages when possible that can also be moved.
  • Removing a section in section edit mode no longer leaves excess whitespace.
  • Users are now prevented from moving root User and User Talk pages, to discourage thinking that this actually changes the user account name.
  • After logging in, users are automatically redirected to page they were viewing when they logged in.
  • The Image: namespace has been renamed the File: namespace.
  • New URL syntaxes for Special:ListUsers:
    • 'Special:ListUsers/USER' and 'Special:ListUsers/GROUP/USER', in addition to the older syntax 'Special:ListUsers/GROUP' where GROUP is a valid group name.
  • Gallery tags now accept image names without an Image: prefix.
  • Redirects are properly rendered when previewing an edit.

Previous updates

Known issues

Capitalization in links, templates, and category tags

  • Links to pages, templates and categories are now case-sensitive in Wiki syntax.
For example, using Main_page instead of the properly capitalized Main_Page will no longer link correctly and will produce a (broken) red link.
Using instead of the properly capitalized will no longer link correctly.
Using Demomodsmall instead of the properly capitalized DemoModSmall will produce a red broken template link instead of including the template.
  • A number of existing pages with these problems have been fixed:
    • A number of existing pages with template tags pointing to an incorrectly capitalized template name have been corrected.
    • A number of existing pages with category tags pointing to an incorrectly capitalized category have been corrected.
    • Some redirects for pages with terms that are commonly used with different capitalization have been added (for example, Point Entity -> Point entity).

Use of HTML headers

The behavior of HTML headers (<h2>, <h3>, etc.) in Wiki syntax has changed.

  • HTML headers now appear in the Table of Contents, just like standard Wikitext section heads.
  • Use of HTML headers inside of <div> tags can cause the Table of Contents and other elements in the article to appear incorrectly.
  • Use of HTML header tags should be avoided. Use standard wiki syntax headings whenever possible, and <div style> tags for formatting in special cases. Some existing pages have required editing to function correctly, but there may be other pages on the site that also require fixes.

Table formatting

As noted above, default tables now have limited formatting. Some tables on the VDC will need to have the standard-table style added to them to make them more readable. Some tables have already received this tag, but there are likely others that will need it.

No double slashes in page titles

Double slash "//" characters are no longer allowed in article titles, due to a bug in the web server software that is used by the VDC. Any article with double slashes in the article title cannot be linked correctly from other pages.
